here is a review

re sound

A quick glance at the portable hard drive space shows why this drive is so special. There are other 2TB drives out there, WD announced a 2TB 2.5" drive two years ago, but with a drive height of 15mm, WD was going after the portable hard drive market, which had stagnated with the rest of the notebook hard drive market that stalled out at 1TB. The z-height makes the WD drive too tall though for notebooks, due to its use of a 4 platter design. The Samsung M9T accomplishes its massive storage by solving the density problem, utilizing three 667GB platters within its confines. While it's easy to forget that Samsung, now a Seagate company, is still cranking away at the hard drive business, they've certainly come back with a bang with the M9T.

The M9T is highlighted by its capacity and physical size, but there's plenty of other engineering inside. The drive is notably quiet thanks to its use of NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies; it reportedly maintains 25 decibels while idle and 27 decibels during performance. It comes equipped with both ATA Security Mode and ATA S.M.A.R.T. features to keep the drive protected from anyone but the intended user. The Spinpoint M9T also comes equipped with standard head load/unload technology to keep it protected from internal physical damage, which is a consideration with any HDD.
at 5400rpm it is a bit slow

also of interest to ps4 fans and xbone

No, PS4 doesn't boot.
I ordered one in an external enclosure, hope it's not the version with soldered on USB. It should arrive today.
This drive has been announced month ago, but is just now showing up in retail channels.

good find.

they are petitioning seagate/sony to update so it can boot.

some ps4 w/ seagate 500gb can boot.
those with WD cannot boot.

i believe this is the quietest 2tb under $200

I just got 4 x WD10SPCX (1TB, slim, 7mm) - just posted about them here. I quite dislike their whoosh noise at idle ... I'm waiting on 3 x Samsung M9T 2TB to see how they compare.

Theoretically, a single M9T should actually be noisier at idle than 2 x WD10SPCX, because the former is 25 dBA and the latter is 20 dBA at idle, so two of them makes 23 dBA ... that is if (i) the specs are accurate and (ii) they were both measured in the same way. I don't trust manufacturer noise specs so I'll test myself.

For PS4 owners who come across this thread, the booting issue has been fixed.
If you intend to subscribe to PSN and download the "free" games, one of these 2 Tb hard drives is a no brainer.

for SPCR
how silent are these drives?

are these the most silent 2tb HD money can buy?

newegg doesn't sell this drive bare but seagate sells it as an external drive which can be removed and then used.

I wouldn't be so sure. Most portable HDD's now have a circuit-board that outputs directly to USB rather than SATA. An increasing number of "desktop" USB HDD's are also doing the same thing I believe.

Whilst this is true on the most part, the Seagate Backup Plus (STDR200020x) drives include the 2TB Samsung M9T with a small USB3 to SATA board attached. I run 4x 2TB M9T in a Synology DS411Slim, all shucked from Seagate external drives bought from Amazon UK over the course of a few months.

are you sure that the STDR200020x series have the SATA to USB convertor, rather than a USB connector directly on the HDD inside the enclosure? I've understood that the STDR200010x series used SATA drives internally, but heard rumours this changed for the STDR200020x series... and the STDR200010x series seem no longer to be easily available on this side of the pond.

to answer my own questions, the Seagate STDR200020x series enclosures contain the Samsung Spinpoint m9t SATA drives too (at least, the two 2TB models I bought did).
