Hi all

Got a server and one of my samsung F4 seems to be going as every so often when the sever comes out of standby the drive is not there and I have to do a full power off for it to come back.

It seems to be doing it more and more and i have tried a different cable and sata port and its still doing it if i restart windows the drive is still not there but if i power the system off and power it back up the drive comes back. (people might be able to help me on that ?)

tried updating the bios
tried a different sata cable
tried a different sata controller on the motherboard.
have 6 drives in total and seems to be the same drive doing it all the time well at least every 1 out ofevery 10 times I wake the pc from sleep.

anyone have any input of thoughts

thanks

If all of your 6 drives are F4's, and you have tried moving things around, it seems very likely it's the drive ?

Anyway, I had two Samsung F4's (idle 99% of the time) connected to an Asus socket 775 motherboard, and when they spun down or I put my computer to sleep, they would not always spin up again, and I had to reset computer to get them back.

If it was mine, I'd retire the reluctant un-sleeper to a more active system or move it on, and replace it. Data loss is just too much of a pain to deal with if you can avoid it.

thanks

I have 4 x F4 samsungs 2tB drive and i think 1x 2 TB F3 the older version and 2 x WD 3TB drives but not to sure which samsung model drive is causing it.

its always the same drive and never the others, I would of thought the bios or motherboard if it was on a random drive but its not and after I movied it to a new sata cable and different sata port on the motherboard its still doing it.

even a reset or slepp would not make the drive come back only a power off and power on would bring the drive back.

putting another 2tb drive using the old sata cable and the same port as the problems drive is working ok so its not the cable or port on the motherboard as i drive a different drive in there.

the only thing i have not done is try a different power cable but i dought it wi;; be that as i have 3 conections on the same cable and the other 2 drives are ok.

was thinking of getting a WD 4TB to replace it .

The only other option than a faulty drive, would be the drives running a different BIOS.

Samsung made a BIOS update for the F4, without modifying version number !

I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms on my HP Microserver and one of my 2TB F4 drives (with updated firmware).

While this is frustrating, the redeeming feature is that after a shut down and restart it is still possible to access the data... which allows to copy the content of the defective disk to another place.
