To add some more information the WD30EZRX is Western Digitals current 3 TB Caviar Green.

WD30EZRX SATA 6 Gb/s, Capacity 3 TB

I found a Tech ARP review here

Good idea. I'd add it's upped the platter capacity to 750GB and rotation speed to 6600rpm over the previous model.

I might be the guinea pig on this one. I've had a favorable experience with my WD GP 1.5TB and the high areal density and performance reported for the WD30EZRX makes it look very tempting for my upcoming HDD purchase. Hopefully the increased spindle speed won't be too detrimental to the acoustics. WD's decibel specs match the 1.5TB and 2TB reviewed by SPCR. Fingers crossed. If nothing else I'll report back in about two weeks.

6600RPM? Do you have a source for that? I'd rather have it stay at 5400RPM.

It's according to the Techarp.com article. WD30EZRX has the same rotation, thermal and power specs as WD30EZRSDTL officially but Techarp measure a higher surface temp for the WD30EZRX attributing to higher rotation speed. Looks like it's anybodies guess really. Could just be WD playing games :roll:

Seriously ? Getting the rotation speed from temperature ? Why not use crystal ball instead ? The only real way to find out the rotation speed is how SPCR does it, from rotation noise profile. Temperature change compared to previous model could be due anything really - different motor, different electronics inside and outside,...

I have yet to see WD Green running at anything else but 5400RPM.

You made me realize that sentence was poorly worded. It should have read; Techarp measures a higher surface temperature for the WD30EZRX than the predecessor which they attribute to higher rotation speed.

Personally I'm inclined to take any WD GP RPM specs with a grain of salt no matter where thay come from :roll:

FYI that "temperature theory" contradicts the WD numbering scheme :
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/F ... 001028.pdf

WD30EZRX = Western Digital (WD) 3.0 TB (30) 3.5 inch drive (E) Desktop Advanced Format/WD Caviar (Z) 5400RPM with 64MB cache (R) SATA 6 Gb/s with 22-pin SATA connector (X).

So no higher RPM, it is a good old 5400RPM drive, period.

Is this one of those new drives that wont work in "old" motherboard with BIOS?.

Well folks I re-did cable mangement in my P150 which somehow made it possible for me to hear a difference when the WD30EZRX is spun up unlike my 1.5TB GP (WD15EADS). Do note that I have the drive hard mounted in my P150 HDD bay(soft rubber grommets). Maybe this device has one platter too many to be in the real silent class. :(

Seek noise is very faint though so it can't be ruled that that it would be a silent performer when suspended.

So it seems even WD couldnt make a 4-platter drive that's silent. I'm compelled to change my setup to 2x 2TB GP with three platters, but where are the 1TB/platter drives at? :?:

I doubt very much that the current generation of WD30EZRX drives resemble the original version released several years ago. For one thing, I know that WD moved to 1TB platters quite some time ago.
