Hi all

I've just installed a new to me (second hand) Western Digital drive, model: WD2002FAEX.

I've read in reviews that these can be a little noisier than the average drive, but most of that refers to clicky read/write noises. I just wanted to make sure that the noise I am getting isn't indicative of a problem... Rather than try to describe the noise, here's a link to a recording I made of it. I used a close up mic, so it does sound louder than it does in the room. It's the fact that it wavers as it does and that it does it regardless of whether it is idle or not that concerns me a little....

I've run a slow scan in HD Tune 2.55 and all blocks showed as ok. All ok on the Health page too. And here's a couple of screen shots of the Benchmarks I took:
So does all seem well?

PS - from what I can see, there are no drivers/firmware available for this drive. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know. At the moment I have just plugged and played.

I have a PaQ case, which has lots of internal foam and stuff holding the components in place. I took the drive out yesterday and listened to it completely out of the case. It made the same sound. I have tried changing how it is mounted (and when I say mounted I mean how it is wedged between to pieces of hard foam) and have managed to minimise the transference/resonance. But not totally.... I am planning to build a wooden enclosure of sorts to help minimise the problem further:

I had been planning that before getting the new hard drive. Now it seems like even more of a good idea!
