Noise / power consumption state of current >2TB 2.5" HDDs

Post by Wild Penguin » Wed Apr 27, 2016 5:08 am

Hi,

Are there any experiences here with large (>2TB) currently available 2.5" mechanical hard drives? For example, how much noise do they generate in comparison to a 3.5" WD Red drive?

I'm a bit low on storage space currently, and I'm considering on getting a new 3 or 4TB drive. As I have a bit of space constraints in my computer case, I'm considering a 2.5" drive, seeing there are some 3 and 4TB drives available in the form factor. At least the Seagate Momentus 3TB is available at an affordable price (compared to a 3TB WD Red for example). As this will be mostly for storing media files, performance (speed) is not that important, but noise noise and power consumption (heat generation in an confined space) is.

I see that at least Toshiba and Samsung have mechanical 2.5" drives up to 4TB in size.

Cheers!

There's a brief test on Anandtech of the 4TB Seagate/Samsung ST4000LM016 (just to have some performance figures).
