Quiet 4TB. ST4000DM0005, WD40EFRX or something else?

Post by drbanan » Fri Aug 25, 2017 7:53 am

Hello! My first post in this forum, and i am very happy to be here, as i see people know what they do :)

I've just encountered a problem - ordered ST4000DM0000 (seduced by low failure rate provided in Backblaze reports), but it was quite noisy.
There were 2 kinds of noises that made this hdd unbearable in longer timespan. First one was from head parking. Second, and worse one, was heard while accessing data - in older drives it was lower pitched, bass-like, now it was in very high tones, "clicking". Probably similar dBa, but high pitched is I returned it immediately.

Now i am trying to find anything for replacement, and found Seagate ST4000DM0005 (released 3 years later if i see good), and WD40EFRX from Western Digital. Previously i was using only Seagate drives, but i am ready for change if WD is better. Which one do you suggest?

I appreciate any help :)
