Noisy CDRW

Well, having installed my Seagate 'Cuda and a Zalmann for both CPU and GPU,
 my PC is now pretty quiet <IMG SRC="modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
 But what's this? There's still a noise emanating from somewhere?
 Would you believe it, it's my trusty Yamaha CRW8424E CDRW! <IMG SRC="modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif">
 Since CDRW's have got a lot faster and cheaper, I guess that's a good excuse to upgrade.
 Does anyone have any suggestions for a quiet one - must be compatible with cloneCD
 (i.e. capable of writing RAW-DAO)
 I don't care how much noise it makes when it's spinning, just noise at idle
 Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Ok, educate me. Why should a CDRW make any noise at all when it's not being used? There should be no moving parts, nothing at all to make noise. I understand that when a CD is inserted, everything changes, but idle??
 
 BTW, I guess I do realize there is an exception with my Plextor that (for some odd reason) has a fan built-in.

I'm not sure - that was my initial thought as well. There seems to be a motor at the back which is constantly on. Maybe someone in the know could shed some light? But the fact remains that it does make the noise, so it's getting replaced!

 I've got an old Plextor 4220 SCSI CD-RW, and just like Kurtl, it's left unplugged
 when not used (most of the time) because the whining is just unbearable on an
 otherwise quite silent computer.

Mine doens't seem to be noisey just really hot <IMG SRC="modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif"> It's a LG 12x8x32 one. It's not a problem. Lives on it's own in the attic of my PC12 with the DVD living at the bottom of the drive bays. <IMG SRC="modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

Id just yank that fan off !

If your really that desperate just use some software to alter the speed of the read on your dvd/writer so its reading quietly....

Other then that theres normaly no major fuss made over writers

I guess that little fan keeps it cool but since one doesnt burn 100 cds per night its ok, proberly would make little difference anyhow.

A little shameless, honest promo: Yahama is advertising a new product called CRW-F1 CD RECORDER on the main SPCR site, www.silentpcreview.com. Its relevance to this thread is:

One review says "Yamaha has done an excellent job making the CRW-F1 a quiet drive. The drive features a new dynamic dampening system that really cuts down on vibration and noise."
It might be worth a try.

That's all good & fine, fellas, but we're gonna need help here. The amount of time we can put into the site IS finite (despite what it looks like sometimes

).

So here's how you can help: tell us about products that you think are quiet & good, AND tell the makers & suppliers of such about SPCR & why they should send us samples for review.

This works. It's how we ended up with Vantec "stealth" PSU samples -- a proactive SPCR member / fan / reader who did precisely the above.
