Silencing Stock P4 HSU

Post by JJ » Sat Jul 10, 2004 12:44 pm

I just put together a new system in my three year old Antec SX-840 case.

Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
Intel P4 3.0C
1 GB (2 x 512MB) Kingston ECC RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB
WD2000JD 200GB SATA HDD
WD2000JB 200GB PATA HDD
2 optical drives
Enermax 475P Noisetaker PSU

I'm neither an overclocker with ten fans in the case (been there, done that, complete with 7000RPM CPU fan), nor do I insist on an absolutely silent system. The Enermax Noisetaker PSU was put in mostly as an upgrade for the old Antec 400W unit - not really in deference to silencing, although to my ears, it's dead quiet.

One small thing that's annoying me, though, is the sound of the stock Intel HSU on the P4. What I just noticed is that if I squeeze the plastic mounting contraption it quiets the unit considerably. What's happening is that the mounting bracket is resonating with the fan. I'd go so far as to say the sound is something of a 'buzz' rather than a whine.

Any ideas of how to fix this?

Replace with a Zalman CNPS7000 Cu .
A worthwhile investment
