LAPPING!

Post by jinu117 » Fri Feb 21, 2003 9:18 pm

I read about lapping in quite a few places... Never really had time to do it nor was sure what they claimed was possible with the kind of airflow I have (at low CFM through each fan in case). Heck, for once in last few months, I haven't bought something new or thought about something new (well thought about something but I am saving it for my next case endeavor)... So...I decided to spend my 30 min lapping... (well, it turned into full 1 hour and half)....
What did I get? -3C in CPU temp!!!
I bet it is more than that since this is new application of Arctic Silver 3 unlike the other one which set for like last 3 weeks or so. (Expecting 1-3c improvement within next week or so).
That puts me solidly at 4-6c temp drop by just lapping.
Simlply... AMAZING. I guess I could turn my fan even slower now (but I will just savor this low temp ... folding at 47c... for a while)...
Next couple of days, I will be lapping few more things... Zalman HP-80A and Zalman Chipset cooler. It does take quite a bit of time to do it really nicely though. (And dremel polisher do help a lot... I was rather dismayed after 2000 nit lapping until I polished it... mirror surface it was)

Hello:

You left out (unless I missed it) what heatsink you are using? ;-)

Zalman 5700Cu it is. In fact, I saw similar gain with Thermaltake in my athlon rig. Instead of tuning it for even more quietness, my system is over clocked instead now... :P
