Which cooler for LGA1156 from this reseller?

Post by Cams » Sun Oct 11, 2009 11:16 am

I'm about to order an i7-860 and Asus P7P55D from my favoured reseller. They have a few HSFs for this platform in stock and I wondered what the SPCR endorsed choice would be. Here's a link to their HSF page for socket 1156 compatible:

Kustom PCs

Anything there that jumps out as the obvious choice?

I do have a Scythe Ninja but I'm guessing it won't fit the motherboard.

thanks

I just spent the last couple of hours reading reviews on here. The Noctua NH-U12P is higher up the list of recommended coolers, but it's £62. The Zipang 2 is more affordable but doesn't mount as securely. It's over £20 cheaper than the Noctua though.

I couldn't find much on the Zalman CNPS9900 (either NT or 9900A-LED). They are similarly priced to the Zipang 2. Would either of those be a good choice for my i7-860? Or would it really be worth spending the extra £20 for the Noctua? (providing it would fit on the P7P55D in an Antec SLK3000B case).

The Noctua is probably worth it, IMO.

The Zipang would be the second preference, but if you are concerned about the mounting system it may be worth paying a little more for your piece of mind. Besides, you may not need the second fan that comes with the Noctua, so consider the price as including a case fan as well.

Zalman coolers aren't always particularly quiet.

I just installed the Noctua on the exact same configuration, installed it with one fan in a antec P183. Idle is 26C and load is 41C with the two tricool fans running at low and the cpu fan at 1300rpm, ambient temperature around 20C.

The installation was easy and the there is no flex at all after installation.

Thanks for the help folks. I just ordered the bundle and got the Noctua. Now I can start getting excited! I threw in a SATA DVD drive as well so I can finally ditch IDE and I'm taking out the floppy drive as well.

Welcome to the 21st Century!

Turns out to have been a great buy! That system is still going and is now being handed down to my son. I've ordered a Noctua NH-D15S for my new i7-6700K rig. It was expensive too, but I know that these things work and have longevity!
