Silent CPU-cooler for Intel i5 Haswell CPU

Post by karelvanhoof » Sat Dec 21, 2013 8:38 am

I'm searching for a silent CPU-cooler for an Intel i5 Haswell CPU (no watercooling).
My case is the Corsair Carbide 330R + PSU Corsair RM450.
I will use the computer mainly for office work, not for overclocking.

What did you think of the following?
Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced C1
Gelid Tranquillo Rev.2
Scythe Mugen 4
Cooler Master Hyper 412S

Welcome to SPCR. The latter three are all good coolers. Any would work well with your build (the 300R has 170mm cooler clearance). In order of best cooling and lowest noise:
1) Mugen
2) Tranquilo
3) Hyper

It's hard to recommend Be Quiet!. While their fans are great and the coolers are great, the heatsink plate often mates poorly with the CPU leading to less than stellar temps/noise - unless you want to lap it flat.

IMHO the 412S should edge the Gelid, but the mileage may vary slightly.

What motherboard you own?

out of what you have on your list i would go with Scythe Mugen 4, got the editor choice on SPCR, and i had the Mugen 3 and pretty solid cooler.

Thx, I go for the Scythe Mugen 4.

I'm building a completely new system mainly for office use:
Intel Core i5 4670
Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3-1600 CL9 kit 8GB ZWART (CML8GX3M2A1600C9)
Scythe Mugen 4
Asus Vanguard B85
Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
Asus DRW-24F1ST
Corsair Carbide 330R
Corsair RM Series 450W

What do you think about this setup?

I like it, solid components all around, with the Asus B85 mobo + FanXpert2 you should be able to drop the fan on the mugen 4, Scythe Glidestream to about 400-500rpm on idle and ramp it as temps goes up, and so the 3pin fans on case, +RM psu bieng quiet, should en up almost inaudible at idle once you run FanXpert2.
