Best CPU cooler for Low RPMs ( 250 - 450 Rpm ) for i7 6700k

Post by blake312 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 7:47 pm

I recently upgraded from i5 6600k to i7 6700k and noticed that the processor gets extremely hotter, on my Scythe Kotetsu with Noctua NF-F12 PWM I was doing 250 RPM Idle and 450 RPM - 500 RPM @ 64 C on Prime 95 / FurMark ( i5 6600k ) but now it runs at 1500+ RPM ( i7 6700k ) on Prime 95 and FurMark @ 85 C, so I am guessing I am gonna need a bigger heatsink to run at lower RPM? Any recommendations? Looking to get back on 450 - 500 RPM on Prime 95 / FurMark @ 64 C. Will Scythe Ninja 4 do the trick?

Yeah, the i7 runs hotter, but that's pretty high temps/rpms for this cooler and just a 91W CPU.

Perhaps there was a problem with the cooler seating. Remove it and look at the thermal compound pattern on the CPU. It should look like a nearly transparent layer in the center of the IHS for proper seating. If there's a lot of excess thermal compound and a fractal-like pattern, then the cooler isn't seating well.

Seems very similar to what i have experienced with the 4770K and the 4790K, the i7 run hotter around 10C hotter than i5 on same clocks, but usually the top of the line i7 has much higher clocks, turbos and voltages... no way of evading the hotter running, unless you underclock/undervolt (imo not worth it but really depends on the binning of the cpu). And about the CPU cooler, you might get slightly better temps but just marginally, if you didn't have the kotetsu i would recomend the ninja4, but since you have it.... it will be marginally better. Still 85C is a safe temp for today's intel cpus, and those are scenarios that most wont encounter.

I found the problem AI Suite 3 keeps overclocking it, how do I stop this I just want it for the fans -_-

Uninstall AI Suite? That would be the most effective way. Is the extra performance needed then or not? I wouldn't worry about what it's effect might be when stress testing which is unrealistic, what temps do you get during normal use?

The Scythe Ninja 4 might get you a couple of degrees lower but with that kind of overclocking going on that looks like an expected temperature anyway.

IF the problem persists, you could also manually set the power/turbo/etc limits in the bios or with intel's own extreme tuning utility. I've had some similar problems with my 4790k, and XTU's actually fiddling with the bios, so the settings will persist on restart.

I see that you are not using the CPU_OPT PWM fan header. Try plugging your exhaust fan into this header and running it in sync (same duty cycle) as the CPU PWM fan. If your case will take a second exhaust fan that would be a further option to explore. Fan Xpert 3 includes the Fan Stop facility, so you could fit a second exhaust fan (or put the intake fan there temporarily) and simply hold it off until a target CPU temperature is reached. The typical target CPU temperature for fan stop is 50C so this avoids the issue of additional fan noise at idle, but would give significantly more exhaust airflow when the CPU is stressed.

Update: ASUS mutli Core enchancement is what causes it to OC basically it's like permanent turbo boost, it auto turns on when you set the profile of the ram to XMP, second it still said 05% under the TPU after I turned it off and found out that was the regular turbo boost from Intel cpu, after i turned that off it said 00% under TPU. Now I am gonna test and see how it runs under FurMark and Prime95.

The reviewer (and the staff who accepted that) was either in bad faith or an idiot.

The reviewer was...

...at his second review ever, plus his nickname is "Banana"... nomen est omen? Though that was just a copycat of his Editor in chief thought (I mean, that's enough to comment their comments)...

I'm relieved that it was all BS.
