AMD Wraith cooler: really "near silent"/"whisper quiet?"

Reviews of the new AMD stock cooler Wraith seem very positive but the stated average noise is 39 dB.

Is SPCR preparing one of its very good analysis?

Why would SPCR readers/fans be interested in a 39 dBA CPU cooler?

The Wraith, with its 80mm fan & top down heatpipe design, looks like something from aftermarket sources going back at least 10 years. It's a throwback, not an advance.

There are umpteen coolers in our test database that are far, far quieter & likely far more effective at cooling as well.

It will be shipped to thousands (or millions) of customers. And many tech sites already say that it is soooo good (not "better", but "good" and "whisper quiet"). Having a well done research can be useful. One can point to it to show people on forums how badly informed they are. Showing forum goers how badly informed they are is important!

so not really for SPCR, but for everyone on other sites ? Why would SPCR staff waste their time? its rated at 39 db, and will be much higher in our chamber.

So Tom's compared it to the Thermalright Macho Rev B: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd ... 450-2.html

At 1600rpm they measured the same temps as the Macho at 700rpm with an 8370 running Prime95. That seems very good to me. Almost too good to be true considering it's size and 1600rpm from a 92mm fan shouldn't be too bad. I run my NF-A9 at 1300rpm under load and it's extremely quiet there - guess it has a rattley, ball-bearing fan though.

It's max rpm is around 3000 so maybe that's where the 39dBA comes from.
