Noctua NH-D14 vs D15 for I7-6700K

Post by timg11 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 7:07 am

I'm looking for a quiet cooler. This is for an audio recording workstation. Quiet is the most important, not planning any overclocking.

The I7-6700K is LGA1151. The Noctua NH-D14is still available at slightly lower cost compared to D15.

Is the D14 compatible with LGA1151 sockets?

It should be, LGA1150/1155 is the same in terms of the mounting mechanism, as long as the stock has one of the three supported, you should be fine with 1151.

Some things for you to take in account before buying,
NH-D14 LGA2011 version was the only one that came with 2x PWM fans.
NH-D14 standard came with 2x 3pin fans,
NH-D15 comes with 2x PWM fans.
NH-D15S only comes with 1x PWM fan.

You can always go aftermarket fans later on, depending on your needs, but its important to take into account the type of fans it comes with and how you plan on controlling them, because at the end what seems cheaper might end up more expensive, by this im not saying you should go with either, just to take all things into account before committing into either.

What motherboard will you be using?
Are you planning on using software or bios to control the fans?
