be quiet! Dark Rock 4 series and Silent Wings 3 incongruity

Post by lb_felipe » Tue Apr 03, 2018 10:06 pm

Everyone knows Silent Wings 3 140mm has 7 blades. However the new Dark Rock coolers include a modified SW3 140mm whose counting of blades are 9!

CPU coolers using different fans than the normal retail offerings are not that much of an incongruity. Arctic Cooling, Noctua and Scythe amongst others have done this. Some of them are continuing to do it. Maybe it's because they are willing to modify an existing product to get the best possible performance on a CPU cooler.

I know it. Meybe I did not find a better word, since Englsish is not my language. I use Google Translator. lol

That makes me sad because I was dreaming a system with Dark Base 700 (wich comes with two SW3 140mm) with the new Dark Rock, thus keeping the same sound signature for all full tie spinning fans (since the PSU and GFX would have semi-passive cooling).

There also is the fact that classical SW3 140mm is already known by us, and we know they are very good sound-wise. I hope Abula, who has SW3 140mm and SW3 120mm, comment about that here.

No more incongruity. The fan of Dark Rock 4 series is NOT the Silent Wings 3.

I just wonder why be quiet did that. Something like static pressure, improved sound characteristics or just it is a shame.

The main thing I noticed about the Dark Rock 4 is the improved mounting system which is now a cross bar fitting like Thermalright and Scythe.

Here shows that it is SW3 but with 9 blades instead of 7.

That's 140 mm vs 120 mm.

My assumption:
The fan blades look the same, and to get the same area cover with larger diameter two more blades are required.

The Dark Rock (PRO) leaves a bit to be desired for use with AMD CPUs. Can only be mounted in one direction. For the PRO version that's with vertical flow...

I am not comparing SW3 140 with SW3 120. be quiet! has indeed changed its SW3 140 in its geoetry.

Original SW3 140 has 7 blades as you can see below.

The reason why that fan has 9 blades is because it is only 22mm wide to fit in the middle of the Dark Rock Pro cooler, the standard 7 blade fan is 25mm wide.

I do think they are different in design overall, a little like the EK Vardars, and since they are design for high static preassure seems in line with what will be the use on the new bequiets.

I don't think the fans on the Dark Rock 4/Dark Rock Pro 4 are an innovation as the same 135mm x 22mm x 9 blade fan was also fitted to the Dark Rock 3 and Dark Rock Pro 3. Agreed there are variations in maximum speed between the two ranges but that's about it.

Incidentally this 135mm x 22mm x 9 blade SW3 fan was tested by SPCR in February 2015 as part of the review of the Dark Rock Pro 3.
