Aerocool DS fans?

Post by Copyright » Wed Dec 17, 2014 11:35 am

Saw someone showing a test Aerocool DS 140mm FDB Fan vs a Noctua Redux and it is supposed to move as much air and makes much less noise. Are these the real deal or another gimmick?

The Aerocool DS 140mm is a 3 pin fan with a top speed of 1000 rpm, or 700 rpm using the supplied 7V adapter which is more or less the same spec as the fan supplied with the R5. As it understand the comparison with the Redux claims that the Aerocool is quieter at 1000 rpm but the Redux moves more air. Now given that the Redux would normally be running in a case under motherboard control at a speed related to the CPU temperature then because it is moving more air the CPU would probably be running cooler. And because the CPU was running cooler it would not run the Redux at 1000 rpm, probably more like 900 rpm. And at that speed the Redux might be as quiet or quieter than the Aerocool.

From what I am reading there are two version of the Aerocool DS fans.. the US model shows to be 1,500 rpm for the 140mm. Knowing both models are capable of 1,500 rpm what would be the better choice? Because I am running a window in my case I an tempted to use the Aerocool but worried about the quality and I believe a 1 year warranty vs. the Noctua 6 year. I already have 3 of the Noctua coming but I can always find a use for those later on. Would the Noctua still be the best option?

Yes, the US version does have a top speed of 1500 rpm reduced to 1100 rpm if the 7V adapter is used. I have seen a review of this fan versus the 135mm Be Quiet - the conclusion is about the same noise levels, a touch better cooling for the DS (it is after all a slightly bigger fan). I don't think this fan would be particularly desirable if only BIOS/UEFI fan control was available, most motherboards can only do the equivalent of 7V to 12V; MSI can do slightly better at approximately 6V to 12V. So getting it under around 1000 rpm at idle would depend absolutely on using an Asus motherboard and FanXpert 2 or 3.
