This is a thermal compound question thread. Let's get right to it! :D

MSI NX8800GTS-T2D640E-HD OC GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

I recently purchased this videocard in conjunction with a tube of Arctic Silver 5 from The Egg. The AS5 was intended for the new Q6600, but I thought perhaps I can save some of it and apply the goop to the GPU as well. I've never disassembled a GPU before to put new thermal compound on it so I'm a bit nervous. I looked through the FAQ sticky here in this forum but it didn't mention any guide. For those whom attempted this feat before, could you please lend a greenhorn a hand?

While on the same topic, this is the mobo it is going to sit in:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Is it advisable/relatively safe to remove the two heatsinks and apply the AS5?

If anyone here has tried to apply AS5 to any other component than the CPU please give your pointers. I've put it on CPU HS's before, but never anything else. Before I RMA a nice box of goods back to Newegg, I'd just like a little reassurance.

AS5 can be used on chipsets and gpus, however it is not ideal and more care is required of how much is on and how it is applied.

The reason it is not ideal is because AS5 has silver particals that makes the TIM slighty captive (captive doesn't mean conductive!) which may cause some complications on your hardware. Im not saying it's a bad idea, im just saying be more patient while applying this stuff. Ived used AS5 on my chipsets in the past and it did a terrific job.

A recomended paste for greenhorns :p is AS Cremique or the newly released MX-2, which is having some terrific reviews lately and going great compare to the AS products up to date, because of their non captive properties. (I recently switched all my AS5 to mx-2, just to let you know :) )

I've used the AS Cremique before in the past, it works great. However, masking off the areas around the HS's isn't a big deal. Top performance is key and from all the reviews I've read, the As5 is top dog.

Regarding your mx-2 suggestion, the mx-1 appears on Newegg, but it doesn't appear that they sell the latest version:

imo Artic silver 5 is a defacto paste that has set standarts but it is not the definate best. The definate best that beats all is coolabs but no one likes a conductive metal paste covering gpus with a tendacy to 'bind' the sink and chip togeter (yes I used coolabs and I have it in my possesion)

AS5 is getting outdated and 2 paste that has recently came out can beat it without the risks of metal TIM

MX-2 and IC Diamond 7 (although both are still being tested at various sites, these 2 paste already showing potential)

I never buy computer modding parts, cases, and power supplies from newegg. They are over priced from that site (unless there is a great sale), only computer hardware is good priced.

Newegg didn't have the Ninja cooler revB which I wanted either, so it looks like for cooling goods, I'll have to go elsewhere.

Jab Tech has some prices that are about 20% less than Newegg on fans and HS's. Looks like that will be the place to go to get the paste and HS/fans.

Per the roundup review or late, this was one of the really recommended fans. As soon as it is back in stock I'm going to couple it with the MX-2 to put on the GPU/CPU and grab a few of these 120mm fan units as well.

Thanks for pointing these other guys out, their prices extremely reasonable. :)

I've successfully used AS5 between a radeon 9600 and a zalman passive cooler.

It was pretty hard to do, because the gpu core didn't have a heat spreader and was very small, and the metal block from the zalman wanted to keep sliding from the center before I got it secured with the bolts hard enough. I had to wipe some stray AS5 off various places where it went because of the gpu block sliding over the gpu, but finally got it right.

Now all this difficulty probably had nothing to do with AS5 itself, but this might apply to your case on some level.

And the capacitivity, what kind of problems should I get? My box is rock stable with AS5 on the cpu and gpu.

The MX-2 (which has now been ordered for this rig) shouldn't pose the problems with electricity that the AS5 does if you aren't too careful. The thermal tape they put on the MSI 8800 was a pain to remove as it smears instead of coming off cleanly, plus it seems to leave a fibrous substance behind. Last but not least, the heatsink for the GPU where it meat the thermal tape is uneven in spots. I'm wondering if I shouldn't go heavy with the paste once it arrive or even try to sand down the areas that are poorly machined.

This isn't my exact unit, but those knobs that protrude from the HS are rough to the touch, as some have little peaks and valleys on the same contact.
