Some careless (stupid?) forum search restrictions

Post by quest_for_silence » Mon Mar 14, 2011 1:51 am

Apparently I can't use just the keyword "enermax" to perform a search over the forums, as it is recognized by the software as too generic.

What a pity that I wasn't looking for just "enermax", but for the word "enermax" only when written by myself, a fairly more restrictive query. I suppose the same goes for similar words, but I haven't actually tried.

Is it possible to set those limitations in a more properly/careful/smarter way?

Moreover, could you kindly set the forum software to let the search be performed even over the CODE tags (apparently now it isn't so)?

I'd be very glad to receive any official and effective answer.

Yes, I found the same with both 'Enermax PSU' and 'Enermax power supply'. On the other hand 'Seasonic' found 14473 matches....

But 'quest_for_silence enermax' yielded the expected result, i.e. every post with those two terms in it.

I've used the "Search for author:" option to restrict the query, as I was used to do up to last february (and also as I am used to do on other phpBB platforms).

I will give a look to your suggested workaround, thanks.

I'm referring to the proper forum search tool: search.php

The site looks like it is run with a software package. Making a change to the PHP is probably an impractically difficult/costly project. Though I do agree with you, that search function leaves much to be desired.

The restrictions I'm talking about are almost ever set by the local admin, and not built-in ones.

yeah, I signed up on the forum cause I'm building a new computer and wanted to find out what the review of the Zalman Z9 Plus was. However searching the forums yielded several thousands of hits for the word "plus", and minus the words Zalman or Z9. Seems the forum won't acknowledge the word Zalman. umm... I know I'm a newbie here, but that's bad.

You need to search for *all* the terms; not just *any* of the terms, to limit the results. Zalman is very common, as is Plus, and Z9 is not long enough a search term.

Did you look through the reviews?

Try this Google search:

SilentPCReview.com: Zalman Z9 Plus

The first hit is this:

This is another careless (stupid?) limitation: in fact I cannot search for "windows" "xp" "ssd", all terms, in just in the "silent storage" forum because the "xp" term is neglected. Can the admin do anything about?

Search terms must be 3 characters or more. Two letter words would probably make it an order of magnitude harder?
