Quiet / Noisy Monitor Survey

They make noise, too.

Dell U2311 - Faint buzz audible from the back. Undetectable 30cm from the front and not annoying.

Dell 2209WA - pretty low buzzing, have to find a sweet spot with brightness to have it more silent. But when theres a lot dark/bright on screen like a text document, it starts a loud "bzzzzzzzz".

Samsung F2380: brightness-controlled transformator-whine. Only silent if set to 100 brightness, worst at about 30 (loudest mid-freq pitch) to zero (changes to lower freq). Sound is not affected by displayed content or used input.
Still, I wouldn't notice it in an office, only in my too-damn-quiet room at night.

2 x HP ZR24w: No whine as far as I've noticed. Brightness used ~50%-100%.

BenQ BL2400PT, completely silent across its whole range of brightness. A real treat to my ears and eyes, except maybe for the semi glossy surface. I can warmly recommend it for its value (PVA panel, decent response time, pivot) as long as you can control the lighting behind you.
Edit: Listened closely to two monitors, indentical behavior.

LG Flatron 226WTQ-SF:

Complete silence at 100% brightness, can't even hear anything when holding ear close to backside.

BUT...lower the brightness even 1 point and the humming starts...getting louder, the lower the brightness, which immensely annoys me because the monitor uses 40 watt at 100% brightness, but only 17 Watt at 0%, which is just as nice to look at when you fiddle with windows display settings!
No other setting than brightness has any effect on the humming or the power comsumption.

dell 2711

0% noise. If i put my ear right up against the back side of the panel I can hear a very faint sizzle, but thats kind of irrelevant except to illustrate how quiet it is. :)

HP LA2405WG 24"

Had it for a day then returned it. I heard it 5 meters away in the silent room if brightness was not set to 100%.

Reading this thread, I have the money, but I can't buy 24"/26" 1920 x 1200 monitor in 2011 because all monitors whine loud as it seems and I can't stand this whining.

Really sad what monitor garbage companies put on the market nowdays and looks like there are no institutions in countries around the world to stop this manufacturing of crappiness.

I have that screen at the moment the LA2405WG and yea it is buzzing like crazy when not at 100%

I orderd a dell U2410 and it had the same problem (had it replaced , the new one had the same problem), while someone on this forum says his is 100% silent.... its impossible if you ask me

I don't know what to do anymore :(

If anyone can recommend me a silent 24" monitor let me know... so far I can't find any

Get one with external power supply, if it makes noise, you can silence it easier.

Samsung SyncMaster 940BW

I've had 3 of these for a few years. All 3 now whine when on. Brightness setting 31 - Contrast 29.
One has been sold. I'm using the next one (now a problem). Wife using the third one. (3m away - not audible - monitor that is).

Thinking of getting a BenQ BLxxxxPT based on above recommendations. Is the 22in version OK ? (BL2201PT).
I don't like the wires sticking out of the side - options ?

Dell UltraSharp U2311H : Completely silent at 100% brightness. Brain-grating razor-sharp whine at lower brightness.

Dell U2410 is completely silent only at full brightness. Full brightness is very bright and draws a lot of power (>100W).

This becomes a noisy monitor with an annoying whine at anything less than full brightness

Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM, silent (inaudible anyway) at 100% brightness but makes some noise when not. Bright and needs turning down in graphics driver.
Find the 1920x1200 on 25.5" screen very nice to use :-)

Samsung SyncMaster 210T (very old) First one I got was intolerable irrespective of brightness. Got a second, both eBay specials, and it's inaudible, as old screen 100% brightness isn't that bright.
The 1600x1200 on 21.5" screen fits well next to the above :-)

Viewsonic VX2262wm: Totally silent no noise, humming, buzzing at 50% brightness .

Samsung P2070: 100% Totally silent at 50% brightness. Also the external psu does not make any sound. Unbelievable!

Samsung T220: Very annoying humming, buzzing or whatever you call it. It starts below 99% brightness. When 50% its louder.

Samsung 2333T: Totally silent at any brightness. Only a buzzzz If i put my ear right up against the back side of the panel, same as with the Viewsonic VX2262wm.

*I measuered all when it was totally silent (at night) and the Logitech speakers off.
*I have 4 Nexus 120mm Real Silent case fans +seasonic s12 330.

Samsung SM2693HM - 27,5" TN (25.5" viewable), 1920*1200, quiet.
Additional info: not a single problem if not for the default color profiles that need to be replaced and the typical issues of TN matrix with purple and similar color.

Oh i'm not the only one with this monitor :)
Since the rest of my gaming system and room are noisy, I didnt notice this brightness thing. Anyway, no buzz with any setting i tried (i'm sensitive to THOSE).
The resolution is a wonder, but it has been abandoned and we'll be forced to go 1080p or get a bigger size :(

I have a NEC PA271W. I do not run at 100% brightness (otherwise it would burn my eyes).

Only if I put my ear against the air vents do I hear a faint sizzle noise. But under real world usage, it's completely inaudible.

I received a Dell U2410. Silent between 85 and 100 brightness, but an annoying hum with all brightness levels below 85. Unacceptable for me, I am sending it back.

Any thoughts for a silent, wide-gamut monitor?

My experience with Samsung monitors has always been terrible when it comes to to noise/silence.

My latest try, the Samsung 2333T, emitted a constant and annoying buzz (BZZZZZZZ) right from the start.

I personally would avoid all Samsung monitors, if looking for a silent pc monitor.

Note that buzz and hum from the power supply and/or the backlight inverter can develop over time, it doesn't have to be there on day 1 of your purchase.

Dell 2001fp Silent. 9 years old. Separate power supply brick.
Dell 2209WA Silent. 2 years old.
Dell 2005FPW Very noticeable hum. Sounds like the flourescent above my laundry. 4 years old. Cranking up brightness to max does not help. Cranking down to 60% helps a little. Have two of these, both with same problem.
Viewsonic VP2365WB Subtle hum. < 1 year old. Hum goes away at brightness 100%, but too tiring for my eyes even after trick of cranking down brightness in the GPU settings.

Dell U2311 makes a 'woo' type of sound but relatively quiet. Kicks in sometimes.
Dell U2412 is quieter and inaudible at 1-2 feet away, but is a 'eee' sound. Kicks in below 97 brightness.

U2412 shows that even LED backlit is not immune to such noise. Bought it just to try.

Dell U2711 - rev A07 made in China on 220volts in Ireland: Transformer hum noise when brightness below 60% otherwise silent. This is annoying as I have a completely silent laptop (SSD + no fan) and a very quiet environment. I guess in many environments the hum would not be noticeable.

Others have stated this display to be silent - so it may be luck of the draw.

I also previously had 2 Dell 2407WFP's which had a similar hum on lower brightness settings.

BENQ FP24WZ: low pitched whine from 0 brightness to 25 brightness, high pitched whine starts at 25 brightness and ends at 75 brightness.
It's a shame I have to turn the brightness up so high just to make my screen silent. Why does it even make noise? Isn't there some cap I can glue, some hole I can plug? Seriously, I calibrated my screen, but now I have to sacrifice image fidelity for silence. Sure, I'll do it, but it makes me one sad panda.
