Dell Ultrasharp Monitors. . . Buzzing?

They make noise, too.

Dell Ultrasharp Monitors. . . Buzzing?

Post by IdontexistM8 » Thu Jun 20, 2013 4:00 am

I've short-listed a couple Dell Ultrasharp models in for my build. viewtopic.php?f=23&t=66250 They seem the best bang for your buck in terms of colour reproduction, IPS matte screen, ergonomics etc.

However I have read some reports of buzzing issues when the brightness is reduced from max. Most of these reports appear to be more than a year old so the problem may have been resolved. I can put up with some buzzing from TVs but not a monitor because you are in such close proximity to it.

Has anyone had recent experience with the Ultrasharps? ATM I'm most likely to buy the U2312HM. If I were to buy I'd get it from Amazon has their returns policy is so good.

Dell U2412M here, purchased September 2011. No buzzing at any brightness level whatsoever, even with my young ears right up against the top and back of the monitor.

Dell U2412M here as well. Silent at any brightness setting.

I'm curious, why U2312HM? You do know that 1920x1200 is the shit, right?

Years of using 16:9 means I'm not particularly concerned. The 24" is £50 more expensive and has less height adjustment than the 23". I'll take a look at some Youtube reviews first before deciding.

U2311H since one or two years, can't remember well.

No buzzing whatsoever, silent with G41 onboard and after that with a Sapphire 4670.

Same here with a Dell U2711.

I'm not putting my ear onto it, I don't really see myself using the monitor that way. ;)

U2412M at home and office ... both are dead silent without any buzz at any brighness level

Only buzzing when UPS in back up mode (squarewave UPS) , I believe same thing could occur on any monitor with squarewave UPS

U2412M here too, about 10 months old, I don't hear anything at all, running 38% brightness and 75% contrast.

Long(~ish) time reader, first time posting and all that (hi!)

I bought 2 U2412M's a few months back and they both, though the other is far less noticeable, give off a high pitched sound when not at 100% brightness, though the sound can only really be heard when placing my ear close to the upside of the monitor and even then the sound seems to be very directional, meaning that if I move my head by just a centimeter to the side I can't hear it anymore. There are 5-6 spots like this along the upper rim.

At the spot where I'm sitting, around a meter away I can't hear it, though sadly my current computer is not as silent as I would like it to be (about to change soon, I hope), not to mention me having slight tinnitus...

Worth noting that the monitors have markings that say 'U2412Mb', in which the 'b', according to http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 52392.aspx , means that the manufacturer location is different from U2412M's.
Also, it says that they're Rev. A00, though I'd figure it means that it's the first revision of the U2412Mb batch, rather than having anything to do with the U2412M Rev. A00, which I remember reading was not the best version of the original monitor around.

Also, the same high pitched sound at greater volume is produced when displaying a clock and phase test picture such as http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/clock_phase.php
When displaying that picture, the high pitched sound can be heard at the 1 meter distance I'm sitting at and can also be heard at full brightness.

Just to say I bought a Viewsonic VP2365-LED. Partly because of their zero dead pixel policy and the degree of height adjustment.

There's no discernible noise at any brightness level. Nice monitor, impressive picture, perhaps just a touch of uneven brightness, I reckon that can be pretty much nullified by calibration. I had one stuck pixel at initial power on, it sorted itself out after a pixel fix video. Power button placement is bit annoying, quite easy to turn off by accident. Settings are pretty basic but do the job. Happy so far.

I've had three Ultrasharps (a 2211 and two 2412s) and never noticed any sound from them. I'm pretty sensitive to coil whine and related high pitch noises too.

I'm also in the process of trying to get a good U2713HM. I've been sent four monitor so far and they all have had backlight bleed and pixel defects. However, none of them has made any noise (although reports indicate that the earliest revisions of the monitor did buzz on all-white backgrounds).

Now my Panasonic ST-50 plasma... that thing is noisy.
