Post by whispergear » Wed Jan 01, 2014 2:55 am

Constructed a new pc based on following componenents:

Intel DH87RL a low power consumption MB
i7-4771 Haswell
Seasonic X-400 fanless
NoFan CR-95C Copper Fanless CPU Cooler
16GB (2x8GB) Kingston HyperX blu DDR3 CL10 1600
1TB Crucial M500 SSD
Sony Optiarc AS-5240S
HP ZR2740w 2560x1440
Windows 8.1 Pro
Coolermaster 352 case stripped of all fans

The experience I want to share is the temperature of the CPU which sofar stayed under 125 Fahrenheit.

Fanless systems with reasonable power are now within reach, the one area you have avoided which often causes problems is a graphics card. Not everyone here is a fan of the Nofan as it is very big, heavy and expensive but if it works for you that is good. Any significant buzzes or whines from components?

Hi whispergear

Would you share some pictures of your setup, please?

Edit: Thanks!

No moving parts except for the short spinup of the DVD drive in boot process, absolutely silent the rest of the time.

Thanks for the picture.

Did you try a case fan, on the top back, running at 300rpm?
(would you be able to hear it?)

Would this help for the temp?

The temperature you gave is when idle or when low usage.
How is it when you really use your i7?

With a temp under load of below 50 Celsius I do not see a need for a fan at all. I do have one but really do not see the point. Maybe it gets different in the summer without AC.

Who would believe that I am (crazily) brainstorming to find the best silent solution for my future build, and to limit the number of fans.

And that I am planning a small i3 54WTDP, when you can run your i7 84W TDP, just fanless.

Sometimes I wonder if it's really necessary that I ask myself all these questions.

(But yes, there might be a change between winter and summer. Here I could have a delta of 7-10 °C in the room. Let see your temps, in 6 months. )

Sofar running the i7-4771 without fans is working well but beware of its 4600 integrated graphics. There is no option to get sound on the HDMI, wish I had known this prior to building the current setup. Hopefully Intel and/or Microsoft are able to fix this bug.
If it does not get fixed I can still go back to my previous setup using an i5-2500T, but it would mean transplanting the harddisk and the Nofan cooler. It is now fixed in setting display to extend desktop or clone desktop.

A nice ready made example
