now i looked it up and i turned off indexing but it still makes noise.
any ideas how i can quiet it down? standard 7200rpm samsung spinpoint nidec motor

The drive itself, its firmware has stuff going on. It usually goes on for a while and then quiets down in my experience.

ok. if i get an ssd will it also be re-writing the ssd and if so doesn't that reduce useful lifespan?Vicotnik wrote:The drive itself, its firmware has stuff going on. It usually goes on for a while and then quiets down in my experience.

Depends on how much you re write, NAD wears down with writing, but there are tolerance levels where its not very likely an average user will reach. That said there are things that you can do to mitigate it somewhat like overprovisiong or you can go with SSDs with higher endurance like Intel 900p.dan wrote:ok. if i get an ssd will it also be re-writing the ssd and if so doesn't that reduce useful lifespan?Vicotnik wrote:The drive itself, its firmware has stuff going on.
