Well, it comes to the table packed full of the latest and greatest technology AMD has to offer, not to mention its 12-core, 24-thread configuration with each logical processor capable of boosting to 5.6GHz. All thanks to the power of the 5nm Zen 4 architecture. But how does this stack up in terms of performance? Let’s find out.

Before we begin, it’s important to see the raw power potential of the 7900X. We take a naked look at the specifications of this CPU and hopefully get a glimpse into what it’s capable of.

As you can see, the 7900X has a pretty impressive list of specifications. We’re excited to see the max boost speed climb higher and higher as we ascend the list of Zen 4-powered CPUs.

We tested the new Zen 4 powered Ryzen 9 7900X in a manner of different ways, some synthetic, some real-world, to get the best feel of what this CPU can do. And we must say that this CPU is a testament to the advancements that AMD has made over the last 10 or so years. From the FX to the first Ryzen CPU, it has all led up to this fantastic piece of silicone.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of benchmark performance of the 7900Xm we must first specify the test bench on which we put the 7900X through its paces.

The test bench we used to test the Ryzen 9 7900X consisted of: 

  • Ryzen 9 7900X
  • ASUS ROG RYUJIN ii 360 CPU cooler
  • ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme
  • Gskill Trident Z5 NEO DDR5 @ 6000MHz
  • MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 3080
  • Fractal Design ION+ 860W
  • Samsung 860 Evo

With that out of the way, let’s get into the synthetic portion of our 7900X review.

We ran the Ryzen 9 7900X through CPU Z, Cinebench R23, and Geekbench 5. Noting both single and multi-core scores. We often compare the 7900X to the previous generation’s 5900X, to get a feel for how far we have advanced through just one generation of AMD CPU.

In CPU-Z, the Ryzen 7900X scored impressively on both the single and multi-core scores, which were 789 and 11,827 respectively. Amazing compared to the 5900X, as it only managed scores of 680 and 9,516. it does go to show, however, that the 5900X is still due some consideration.

In Cinebench, the Ryzen 9 7900X stole the show with incredible benchmark results, in the single-core, the 7900X scored 2,022, and scored 28,379 in the multi-core score, very impressive.

in Geekbench, we observed the 7900X bring home scores of 2,259 in the single-core, and 18,720 in the multi-core benchmarks. Much better than the 5900X’s attempt that brought home 1,723 and 14,509 points respectively.

All in all, the 7900X performed much better than the 5900X, about 29% better on average according to these benchmarks. But how does that translate into real-world performance?

Not only did we put the 7900X through its paces in synthetic benchmarks, but we also got some real-world performance in there too. The games we tested the 7900X on are BFV, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, CS:GO, and GTA V.

All of the benchmarks were run with the games in 1080p low settings, as we wanted to measure the CPU’s performance in games. We wouldn’t be able to do that if we were GPU-bound.

In Battlefield V, the Ryzen 9 7900X managed to bring home an average FPS of 192, only slightly better than the 5900X’s efforts of 189FPS. However, we did notice considerably less stuttering on the 7900X’s benchmark.

In Cyberpunk, everyone’s favorite GPU killer, we saw the 7900X manage an average FPS of 174, very respectable in a game such as this. Comparatively, the 5900X scored 147 FPS, quite a decrease.

Elden Ring is fairly well optimized, but we wanted to give the 7900X a try anyway, it did well and brought us an average FPS run of 157FPS, whereas the 5900X came in with 7FPS less on average. It’s worth noting that you have to use mods to un-cap the frame rate in Elden Ring, this could have had a bearing on the results.

CS:GO is a game I’ll never be good at, luckily, the 7900X is. The Ryzen 9 7900X managed an average FPS of 389FPS, a blisteringly fast frame rate. no longer will you be able to blame your bad PC for your performance issue. Compared to the 7900X, the 5900X scored a 365FPS average.

Lastly, we have GTA V, which we seem to be GPU-bound in, regardless of the settings we chose. Both CPUs performed the same in our GTA V benchmarks.

What’s new with the Ryzen 9 7900X?

In general, a lot has changed between the 5000 series and the 7000 series of AMD processors. For starters, the manufacturing process has decreased from 7nm to 5nm, allowing for a much higher IPC and more transistors packed into the same CCD footprint. This allows for a much higher-performing CPU without having to change the socket size.

Speaking of socket AM5 is here, bringing access to some much-needed improvements over the old and tired AM4. These include PCIe Gen 5 storage and GPU connectivity, better power delivery systems, and better aesthetics. Who doesn’t love it when your PC looks good?
