Idle noise from my 36Gb Raptor is actually quieter than my 120Gb Samsung FDB drive. It's really luck of the draw.

All these AMD fanboys. If you guys actually knew anything you'd know that in the corporate environment PCs only come with P4s or Celerons, and servers come with Xeons. Period. Intel CPUs on Intel chipsets remain usable longer, and despite benchmarking lower are often much nicer to use. A P2-400 mach...

I've the 600W Noisetaker, and it's pretty much silent apart from a slight ticking from the 80mm fan. I've a L1A to go in there which should sort that problem.

If the case is anything like the BTX Dimension 5000, then hard-drive temperature is a major concern. I'd imagine the case is identical apart from the facia. I had a Dimension 5000 in the workshop for a few days being upgraded before going out to site. I put in an additional 160Gb Seagate 7200.7 to g...

1988 Commodore Amiga 3000 PSU, made by Aztec I believe. The yellow-label Panaflo finally seized up a few years ago, now running a blue-label Panaflo rescued from a deceased Amstrad 8086 machine.

Just a word of warning about X-Case. Don't expect to get your items in any sort of hurry. At work we order rack cases off them now and again, and the quickest we've managed to receive the case is 6 weeks. Longest was 4 months.

You should be fine if you're only bending it a matter of mm. Heatpipes are made out of copper, which is used because it's easy to bend.

The main problem with your Dell is probably the motor noise from the Nidec or JMC 92mm fan. It might be worth putting in a Panaflo or Vantec instead. You will have to modify the connector on the fan to fit the Dell fan connector. I've fixed a few Dimension 4600 with dud fans using a Vantec Stealth 9...

WD drives aren't known for their low noise either. I don't agree with that in any way. The rest of the points you raised are accurate though, the Precision 370 isn't a wonderfully quiet machine. The PSU fan does run quite fast, as it's a 300W rated supply, and the JMC 92mm fans they use for the CPU...

Those Mercury PSUs are not bad for the price. At work we get a complete case with the 350W Mercury PSU fitted for £18.

The fans do tend to die after ~18 months, and if the fan doesn't die then the supply will most likely stop after ~2 years.
