I have always been interested in low power, small and portable machines. I have been keeping my eye on the eee pc craze. I still feel with its new 10" screen its more of a play toy/ learning tool than a road workhorse. If I were you MikeC, I would just get a business UMPC. I have a Dell Latitude X1 ...

running fanless is pointless. In my HTPC I only have one 120mm fan at 750RPM running and everything is cool. CPU gets to 40 degrees under load, HDD at 30s. Room temp 20 degrees.

As a comparison, when I tried fanless. CPU 50+, HDD 40+.

I find that putting the computer on standby solves the problem. I guess that extra 1W used to keep the ram alive is enough load for the PSU.

Singing and Ringing fanless PSU

I have the mcubed EF16 fanless psu The PSU is cool and silent during usage (when there is load), but when the load is low, the singing from the inductors is really loud. So loud that I can hear it 4-5M away from it. So what happens is when I turn it off it gets louder then when it is on! (this is a ...

Just checked the system logs, it seems to be the driver for the sata card dying O:. (and the HDD connected to the card fails) What's going on here, both the Sata cards are the same brand and model. It seems to only fail when there is a lot of disk usage. E.g. Download to one HDD, extract on another ...

2.5" Head Parking Click.

I have the 2.5" Seagate Momentus 5300.3 SATA drive. Its inaudiable in idle mode. Seek is relatively soft. But the head parking click is very distinct. I know this feature is used in 2.5" to save power and make the drive more resilent to shocks and bumps. This is used in my HTPC so the head parking f...

Yes, the digital optical port on my reciever is already in use by the xbox360. Is there a expansion bracket or some way to add in coax?

I have not finished deciding on some parts of the HTPC so I haven't bought anything yet. To prevent headaches ...

You should also release a steel version with no mesh front. And pre-applied dampening foam to the cover. Bungee cords to attach hard drives onto. That would perform better in terms of silencing. But then again the market for silence enthusiast is much much smaller than performance enthusaists.
