Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows

Sorry for bumping up this old thread. While the batch scripts work great for a few minutes, the unmounted drives still spin up after 5-10 minutes. I'm using Windows 7 -- has anyone encountered similar issues? :-(

Re: The fastest passively cooled graphics card... Ever

If you pick up any stock 6850 (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc.) you can easily undervolt it to sub 1.0V, slap on an Accelero, and run it "passive" with a decent case exhaust. This is exactly what I am doing in my Lian Li Q08 with an i5 2500k -- the whole system only has one front 140mm exhaust, which is contro...

Re: Radeon 6850 Undervolting Survey

I'm sitting at 0.977V on my Gigabyte 775mhz 6850, with the voltages committed in its BIOS with RBE. The two fans were way too noisy even at 20% (whine), so I took off the plastic shroud + fans and slapped on a Noctua 140mm at 7V with zipties. Sits at 70C while running Furmark, much nicer :-) Now jus...

Yeah. I usually don't think twice about modifying my PSUs, but this one is different, I suppose  Anyways, I tried filling in their RMA form, and my serial number isn't recognized. I emailed support@seasonic.com but I got a "failed message" response back immediately. Any tips? :-/ EDIT: For refe...

Seasonic X-750 annoying fan noise -- how to swap out?

My Seasonic X-750, after running for about 4 months, has started to make an annoying high pitched noise whenever its fan ramps up. Unfortunately, it does so every 5-10 minutes, and it's really aggravating. It's definitely the fan since I've waited until it spun up and produced the noise, then stoppe...

Just to note: I'm not dead set on those two fan choices, but they're the only ones available on NCIX (e.g. Canada). However, if, say for example, the Noiseblockers are a ton better, I'd be more than willing to go through the hassle of ordering from the US.

Thanks!

140mm fans in vertical position... help!

Hi all, I recently purchased a Lian Li X1000, and the stock fans were no good -- they had this distinctive ticking sound to them. So I went off and bought a ton of 140mm Thermalright X-Silent fans, hoping that they'd be better. They're awesome when you mount them horizontally... but when you mount t...

A lot of these winners (aside from the Mission, it rocks!) really aren't anything special... yeah they're crazy, but they're also ugly as sin and not very well executed. Some of them (Belguim, People's Choice, for example) have almost no attention to detail. They're like, "hey, look at me! look at h...

Silent Bedroom HTPC - what 2.5" HDD?

Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of refitting an old Athlon 3200+ rig into a silent HTPC setup (it's hard, I know!) -- and I'm trying to find a nice, quiet, inaudible drive for it. It's going to be in my bedroom, running 24/7, so it needs to be absolutely inaudible from a few feet away. See...

As open as that case is, a lot of noise is going to leak out. Mounting it out of the way (behind a monitor, under your desk, something like that) might be worth looking into. edit: Also, how do you have the fan set up? Perhaps it would keep the HDD and chipset cooler if you set the fan to suck air ...

this may be my bad logic, but if a SSD was in that kind of situation, it wouldnt be much better that a normal HDD...the heat could adversely affect the flash based memory in a bad way...i think? The heat tolerance of SSDs is much higher than that of HDDs. Couple that with the fact that SSDs really ...

Mini-ITX HTPC - HDD suspension & modded HSF in an M350

I recently decided to replace my (gigantic) full-ATX HTPC with a mini-ITX build. After a lot of going back and forth between an Atom Ion-based system and an LGA775 based system, I went with the latter. I also wanted to make it as small as possible (if you're going for ITX, go for broke!), so I went ...

Best 80mm fans?

Hi everyone, I've been out of the silent PC game for a while now. I'm currently building an HTPC into a Silverstone LC17S, and it uses only 80mm fans. The last time I was here the 80mm of choice was the Nexus -- has anything better (and cheaper) come out since then? I was looking at the Noctua 80mm ...

WD4000AAKS vs WD5000AAKS

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase another hard drive for secondary storage. Other than the disk size, is the WD4000AAKS the same in terms of noise as the WD5000AAKS? I can find the WD4000AAKS, but not the WD5000AAKS.

Thanks,
Adrian

My Raptors are dead silent on idle.. only noisy on seek (like a garbage compactor).

I guess I'll try it with the NoVibes first.. and go from there. It should be a big improvement over my Wavemaster, at least.

:-)

Thanks

P180 with Raptors - what's the best solution?

Hi all, I've been out of the game for a few months now.. once I get back to the University I'm thinking of purchasing a P180. Right now, I have a Wavemaster with all the fixings.. few 80mm Nexus fans at 5v, an XP-120 with a Nexus, Seasonic S12-430. The biggest issue with the machine was that it was ...

However, it's warm to the touch so it should be doing it's job. There is zero airflow in the case, so :D

It would be cleaner if the Seasonic actually had the wires going out on the RIGHT side rather than the left side (facing the window)... and the Lian Li was too big so the ATX cable had to be 'stretched' like that, otherwise it could be nicely tucked away in the back. :(. Thanks for the comments, :-).

Hi all, I just recently transformed my watercooling case into a full silent air rig, and it has been a fun experience; I am very picky when it comes to noise so I will do anything to achieve inaudibility. The Nexus is $26 Canadian, the SilenX $29.99 Canadian, and the CoolerMaster $9.95 Canadian. The Nexus is the quietests...
