My aged Samsung 240T started whining about a year ago. The brightness fix cut down the noise considerably, but it's still there. Probably about time to replace the old panel anyway.

Western Digital Caviar Green drive. 5400RPM, bit slow but *really* quiet. They're offering free shipping.

In response to MikeC: Actually, I just did set up an A8N32 dual video system with two-slot cards over the weekend. Ninja on the CPU forced removal of the VGA duct. I had enough stuff packed in there that I did soft-mount a front fan (with the tips of the Nexus mounts sticking out, I wasn't able to e...

Can someone with better eyes tell if that's a true passive setup, or if it's just a vertically-mounted fan on the NB next to the CPU socket? Either way, the airflow pattern looks strange.

Nifty! This was one of the handful of heatsinks I've been trying to find more about. Very helpful to see it mounted in the P180, too. Thanks, Mike!

The Scythe Shogun and the Titan Vanessa-L also challenge the XP120, though both have denser fin layouts than the Ninja.

Perhaps a Mountain Mods case? Aluminum cube, 18" on a side, 15 pounds. Hard to imagine a case much harder to silence, though - you'd almost have to put it inside another box.

Try the Silverstone TJ-06 . Fits an EATX board, and I think you're in luck with CPU placement for the duct. If that's too expensive, the Aerocool Spiral Galaxies is based on the same chassis and is often available for much less. Lian-Li's PC-V2100 is billed as a silent EATX case, but it's aluminum a...

How permanently is the cage for external drives attached? I'm still harboring vague dreams of cramming an EATX board into one of these cases, but it looks as if it'll take a fair amount of surgery to pull it off.

Tyan K8WE with a couple of next-generation Opterons. They claim in the user's guide that using an ATX12V supply will damage the board and void the warranty; while I'm dubious of the former, I don't want trouble from the latter if I have to RMA the board later. In theory I could get away with a three...

Quiet split-plane EPS12?

Any votes? Looks as if I'll need the full four rails to power a Tyan board, so Seasonic and Antec EPS12V-compliant supplies are out, and the Enermax entries aren't part of the Noisetaker line. Next candidate's probably the Silverstone ST65ZF - anyone heard one of these in action? Am seriously consid...

Chieftec Mesh CA-01 - unfortunately the holes aren't together. The upcoming CM Stacker 810 might have two 120mm exhaust fans in the right configuration. Otherwise I think you're looking at server cubes . There just isn't enough room on a typical rear panel for two five-inch cutouts. Have you conside...

Okay... Assuming 2x95W Opterons (I'm expecting the dual-core jobs to be closer to their TDP rating than previous chips :P) and 2x75W GPUs, the job's to dissipate a worst-case 340W. Thermochill 120.3 rates about a .015 C/W with 3 Delta 1212VHEs rated for 130CFM. With 3 47CFM Yate Loons, closer to .03...

Watercool GPUs only?

I'm scratching my head over this one: big honking heatercore with low-flow 120mm fans applied to a next-gen 2 proc, 2 vidcard system appears not to outperform two Thermalright XP120s and a much smaller video-only watercooling loop on paper. I knew aircooling was improving, but THIS much? Unfortunate...
