do you have any concerns about running a sleeve bearing fan in a vertical position? i was under the impression that that could harm rpms and/or durability.

in any case, i've always liked the anything-can-be-a-case mods.

precisely what i was going to say. on such a new tech, i'd wait out the growing pains, *especially* if it's going to be used under linux.

i see a number of people recommending northwoods (a decision i made about a year ago) but typically they're talking 3.0c's. after scanning the cpu power consumption page http://www.cpuheat.wz.cz/html/IntelPowerConsumption.htm, i found that there's a ~12W jump (and V jump) when going from 2.8c to 3.0...

having worked on a couple of Dell machines recently i can say that they are NOT all made to be quiet. the constrained formfactor in some of thier machines creates heat exit problems for P4 based systems. Celerons have a lower TDP though, and that makes a huge difference.

got myself a neoHE380 to go with the new case. system works great as long as i don't plug in a 3rd hdd, but then it takes quite some time for the system drive to power up. (a 5400rpm WD) i know my power consumption is nontrivial, but i expected more headroom than i found. i've read recently that mod...

pricewise: look into onboard (gfx, sound, nic/modem) instead of addon cards. a bottom-of-market addon card won't really get you much more performance than an suitable onboard solution for a "daily driver" system. another way to drop costs is a barebones setup, but it can require a bit of digging to ...

heavy drive suspension?

i've got a pair of half-height scsi drives that i'd like to suspend in hope of quieting them, but given the weight of each, i'm wondering if the typical solutions are robust enough to be reliable? the system will be immoble, if that makes a difference. anyone have experience suspending heavier drives?

ok, thier website pimps it up, and given the cheapness factor, i'm willing to give them a try if anyone else hasn't. anyone have any experience with xox, or with the NMBs? But formatting issues aside, do you get vibration / resonance issues from the outer shell? And what processor are you cooling with that setup? Does the PSU fan ramp up when the processor is under heavy load?

i hear rumors that ie7 will have tabs, too. that may spike things when it comes.
