I started with a Zalman CPNS 7000Cu. The fan could not be made quiet enough for me even with series resistor & fan mate. I wouldn't recommend this heat sink unless you do a fan swap. Tried a Thermalright SP-97/90mm Nexus combo next. Very quiet. In my system, this was a big improvement over the Zalma...

So now an LCD monitor is in scope Careful! I never realized how loud the high pitched squeal coming from the transformer for my LCD monitor was until I made my system much quieter and ran it at 2:00AM. It's now the most annoying component in my system. It's not the loudest component, but it's the m...

When considering SCSI, you need to look at the newer fluid dynamic bearing models. They've gotten way quieter. If you like the performance and reliability and already have a controller, they miight be worth the added cost premium to you. I have two Seagate Cheetah 15k.3 disks and both are quiet. Jus...

I had a 9800pro w/vga silencer "die" and not post, but it turned out to be a bad power supply connection. By wiggling the molex connector around I was able to get it working intermittantly. I finally had to re-solder the through pins on the board's connector and it's been reliable since then. I had ...

Now that is really a surprise for me WRT to the raptor. I'd have expected SCSI like shreeking (painful, almost, definitely painful once you reach 15K RPM) with it. I run a Seagate Cheetah 15k.3 in a very quiet system and would have to work to further reduce the noise from the Artic Cooling VGA sile...

I have a similar rig. Modified Sonata, A7N8X deluxe, XP-2500 @ 1.4V Vcore, stock timing. 9800 pro w/AC silencer on low. Globe 120 in front, Acoustifan (sp?) rear fan. I was initially running all fans from the fan only connector, but it was ramping too high. After fixing the intake/exhaust to 5V, the...

I sure hope anyone considering a RAID0 array has already tried all the techniques for silencing their 3.5" drives. I've built and run RAID0, RAID1, and RAID5 machines. I'll agree that RAID0 can show quite a performance boost IN SOME BENCHMARKS. I've noticed a somewhat improved performance in video e...

I can think of two reasons: 1. You want the performance of a 3.5" drive. Al RAID0 is going to do is increase the sustained transfer rate. Unless someone is doing something with really large contiguous files, there's going to be no impact other than adding storage capacity and increasing the likelyh...

I came into the home office and turned on the computer just to check the disk noise again when things are quiet. Damned if I didn't hear a high pitched whine if I turned my head a certain way. I was about to write a post about the 15k disk noise, but I decided to confirm it first. Shut down the comp...

Coolermaster Centurion 5 availability without window
In case anyone's looking for this blue trimmed case without window, I finally found a source. I found the case in blue with a window everywhere, but it seems to be in short supply without the window in that color. Best of all, it's also the cheapest I've found and does not come with a power supply. ...

Re: Hard disks rated by noise & heat
I'm not sure why you're posting "the performance is worth the noise" here at SPCR. You'd likely be more comfortable at Hardforum.com. Performance is actually what brought me here to SPCR. I wanted performance for video editing. I got it, but ended up with a jet engine that I didn't want to sit next...

Perhaps their measurements are not as controlled or as applicable as those done here, but SPCR doesn't do high end hard drives. I know SR has a subjective evaluation as well as a number in each review so it's more than a dB result they give you. I bought my 15k.3 based on their review and have been ...

Hard disks rated by noise & heat
If you're looking for the quietest, the recommended section here is good, but for those interested in higher performance hard disks like me (I do video editing) you might want to check out the data base at http://www.storagereview.com/ You can sort by noise and temperature and see how some of the fa...

I know Antec sells spare parts, probably other case suppliers do as well, but the range of parts is limited (probably to what's most requested). I had thought of Home Depot, but there isn't one that's really close by. Wow, I didn't know anyone lived further than 5 blocks from both a Home Depot and a Starbucks... Side panel windows
It would seem that Coolermaster has made a change to the Centurion 5 model that makes it unsuitable for me. I was unable to find a model for sale without a side panel window. The difficulty with measurements is that they are directly applicable only to the particular setup they are measured on. I think a lot of people don't realize this. Each system is different. Even two people with the exact same components could arrive at different conclusions if one lives in the Mid...

I just got back from Fry's where I looked at the Sonatas. They were not the Sonata II, but they were definitely different than the two I already own. They've now opened the sub-bezel according to the common modifications that users have made, and also cut out much of the sheet metal in front that wa...
