I have a Fujitsu MHZ2160BH. Although it has minimal/no vibrations, seeks are VERY audible and the drive makes a very noticeable pop sound when parking the heads reminiscent of the Momentus 5400.3 drives. A terrible choice for a laptop drive. Might be OK if you could put it in a sound-proofed enclosu...

I can fully second a Zalman 7000 - I'm running an undervolted T5600 completely passively (not even a case fan) in an NSK1300. A word of warning - if you're planning to replace the heatsink bracket and fit a standard socket 478 cooler, not all of them fit - the CPU sits lower than a P4. So you're lim...

What power supply are you using and how are you measuring power? Just curious.... Power supply is a Morex D2D thing (cheap off eBay). I don't have a AC power meter so I'm measuring current and voltage with a multimeter at the input to the DC board. The motherboard and CPU were two very lucky purcha...

My new Core 2 Duo system idles at 25W DC. Load is 36W (measured at the output from the AC/DC brick). MSI 945GT Speedster Core 2 Duo T5600 - 1GHz/0.85V idle, 1.86Ghz/0.87V load (down from 1.1V) 1 x 1GB DDR 667 120GB Momentus 5400.3 laptop drive There's a Zalman 7000 atop the CPU so the system is fanl...

Depends how much power you need. An ATi 9000/9200/9250 is fanless, has open-source DRI (3D) drivers and cheap . Anything newer, and you'd have to use ATi's proprietary Linux drivers - which have a bad reputation. But to be fair, I've never owned an ATi card, nor used their drivers myself. If that's ...

Sorry, can't answer the question directly, but a little program that accesses the disk from time to time should prevent the drive from unloading the heads. I should be able to put together something that does this, if you need it. Folding@Home can be configured to write checkpoint files to disk peri...

You can get 1.2m with a Molex-to-SATA adaptor and this 1.2m (47in.) 4-pin external power cable (I assume it really is suitable for external use). Does the cable even need to be shielded? My computer speaker cable isn't shielded, for example, and seems to work fine. I'd also take a look at eSATA , wh...

The SATA ports on the Asus bracket (and similar products from AC Ryan and Akasa) are "internal" SATA connectors. The cables are unshielded and limited to 1m (though I've seen 1.2m cables marketed for "external" use). An eSATA cable is shielded and looks like this . It can be up to 2m long. Addonics ...

I've not tried any enclosures. The Scythe Silent Box might do the trick (in conjuction with suspension/Sorbothane), but I'm not sure it make sense to spend £32 on one when a P120 200GB SATA can be had for £66 from Komplett (my 180GXP is 120GB and full). So the response is unanimous. I'll wait for th...

Complete silencing
With the installation of a Scythe Ninja, my system (see sig) is now almost silent. With the exception of the hard drive. It's a noisy thing - an IBM 180GXP - which I want to silence completely (at 1m or better). I've got it on Sorbothane chunks at the moment - which decouples the drive from the case...

Nothing to add on the silent front, but it might be an idea to buy your drives from two different etailers. After all, it's not unheard of for three - identical - drives to fail at the same time.

My 350 exhibited this hissing noise too in my 2.8 Northwood + 6600GT system. Normal behaviour as far as I'm aware. It's caused not because your system is straining the 350, but rather because of complex interactions between your components and the 350. I've not noticed whether the hissing I heard wa...
