SMB devices are not available for use as boot media. You need to use iSCSI as a result since they are recognized as a direct attached SCSI drive, even though they are coming over the network.

Re: Fanless or Top mounted big slow fan for HTPC

I know people hate to hear it: small size, cool, quiet, cheap, pick 3. Personally I chose the last 3, cool, quiet, cheap and got an Antec Fusion Remote Max for $125 a couple years ago, and have been very happy ever since. Yes, it is big, but I can fit 140mm tower heatsinks like the Noctua nh-d14, pa...

Re: Corsair Sp120 quiet fans?

Realized I never posted the update. The tonal noise I was hearing was not coming from the Corsair fans. These seem to be pretty good (to me at least). It would be nice to see the benchmarks on these at some point. I believe a batch was shipped to SPCR (at least according to the discussion page linke...

Re: Corsair Sp120 quiet fans?

I picked up 2 of the AF120 quiet fans this past week for use in my R3 as the intake fans (since they have to push air through the hard drives and cages). I believe I have some slight lower frequency tonal noise, but I do not yet know if that is coming from those fans or the exhaust fan supplied by F...

Re: HTPC Desktop Case & Tower Cooler?

Only one I can think of with 3 5.25 bays is a CoolerMaster CM Media 280, but that has been discontinued for several years. I looks pretty bad as well to be honest (I own one, but replaced with a Antec Fusion Remote Max a couple years ago). Since it has a 120mm rear fan in the standard location (abov...

Since I see that you missed it, take a look at the Antec Remote Fusion Max. You can fit 5 hard drives in there even though the specs only list 4x3.5" bays and 1x5.25", there is a second 5.25" bay area (which simply does not have an external opening because the LCD screen is there) where you can put ...

I don't think it would be too hard to pop out the acrylic. It looks like it just has some epoxy on the edges (at least on the Fusion Max which is what I have). The screen itself is simply screwed onto the front panel with 4-5 screws. You would need to remove the wires from the board which connect th...

SST Guy, Not sure how much influence you have on the marketing research guys, but one thing that has been keeping me from using a Silverstone case for my HTPC has been the lack of ATX cases that fit a tower style heatsink like the Noctua NH-D14. I originally had a LC-10M, which I replaced several ye...

I propose a simple experiment. Take two plumbing pipes with different diameters. One large (say 15 cm diameter) and one smaller (5cm). Then blow into both pipes with the same force, while holding your hand close to the other end. Come back and report what you've found out :) Problem is that this ex...

Also take a look at the Antec Fusion Remote Max (note the "Max" edition). It uses a 140mm side exhaust fan and 120mm rear. It will fit a Scythe Orochi CPU heatsink!!!! It also fits the Powercolor HD5750 SCS3 (with the huge heatsink that sticks up above the normal height of the PCB). Unfortunately be...

Just a follow-up to let everyone know. At least for my Antec Fusion Remote Max, the LCD seems to be fine. I am in the USA so I am not sure how this affects world-wide. Re: Finding the perfect HTPC case

The Antec cases (Fusion, MAX, NSK2480) are all really nice, but zero option for a card reader. Beware any Fusion case that incorporates a Soundgraph LCD. Check out the Antec forum at Hexus.net, many people are having issues with this range of cases. Unfortunately I did not see these warnings before...

Pretty much no matter what, 4 raptors are loud especially if they are the older non-VelociRaptors. They will still most likely be the lou...

The only reason Corsair recommends that it be used as an intake is to give fresh cool air to the radiator. With the design of this case, there is pretty much fresh air arriving to it from the 180mm fan below it on the other side of the motherboard. In other cases where the graphics card's hot air is...

I really don't know if it will work. I am not sure how the signal is sent down the 3rd wire, i.e. if it is pulse/time based, or if it is wattage based. If the signal is simply pulse based, then a simply Y splitter will work. If it is voltage based, well, when you split the wire with a Y splitter, yo...

One might guess that three is sufficient, as no IHS can actually get good contact with all four pipes. You might say that... http://www.silentpcreview.com/files/images/xi...

Well, it most definitely has better airflow than my Silverstone LC-10M that I had. I dropped at least 4-5C and my sound dropped a LOT (since with the LC-10M I needed to put a fast 92mm fan on the front intake, and even then it was still choking because of how restricted the intake was setup).

Have you looked at the Cooler Master Media 280? Yes, it has one major quirt, the CD/DVD drive bay stealth door is a POS, and only works with a few specific drives. Well, McMaster has a guide on there that tells you what size you need. I would make my basis on talcum powder or flour.
