Re: RTX 2060 review compilation thread
Picked up a FE from a friend who upgraded. Price was right and the lack of fan-stop didnt worry me (since most axial fan cards I've come across are quiet enough for me at ~1krpm)....BUT... ONE of the two fans has a nasty bearing chatter, easily noted in an otherwise very quiet setup. The other fan i...

Re: RTX 2060 review compilation thread
Founders editions sold out within about 3 weeks. I haven't seen any mention of whether there will be any more. The prices in Canada are a little ludicrous right now, quite disproportionate to US (factoring exchange). The MSI Gaming version (which have had a great reputation for quietness in generati...

Re: Why Intel Processors Draw More Power Than Expected
I wonder how much you can overclock a Core i9-9900K using that cooler? My brother got an i9-9900K with a NH-U14S last week. On worst case P95, without any overclocking it goes north of 200W (according to HWMonitor) and flirts with 90C (Noctua at its 1500rpm max). Real world work load is considerabl...

Re: RTX 2060 review compilation thread
~1krpm at idle is ok with me if its anything like the old 2-fan XFX HD7850 I have. That one falls below ambient for me at that speed (the blades are quite slight though).

CPU temp: who do I beleive?
This is my Intel i5-8500 (on an ASUS H370-F) during a quick P95 (Small FFT):
SpeedFan: 55C
ASUS AI: 60C
HWMonitor: >70C
At idle:
SpeedFan: 22C
ASUS AI: 34C
HWMonitor: 38C
Thats quite a variable there. Who is closer to correct?

Re: RTX 2060 review compilation thread
Debates about the name not matching the price notwithstanding, this looks fairly promising from a performance vs. noise perspective. Anyone here picked up a Founders Edition yet?

UPS has developed a noise of its own
Wasnt sure what forum this belongs in. Please moderate if there is some place better. I have a TrippLite Smart1300lcdt which for the past two years or so has been dead silent (when not running on battery of course). Recently its developed a sound of its own. 60Hz if I had to guess (unsurprisingly). ...

Re: Intel's Z390 chipset
if anyone have some remarks he is welcome to write it. I recently put together a very very similar outfit (STRIX H370 with an 8500, but same RAM, PS, Case, etc). I do think you will want to plan for at least one additional fan for the top-front position in the Define C. In mine I moved both include...

Re: Intel's Z390 chipset
* The result is that often one core is working hard while the rest of the cores are used at <10% of their capacity. And that is why you will (almost) never, ever see Intel's published Turbo Boost speed: it is practically impossible for even a perfectly clean install of Windows to NOT load more than...

Re: Intel's Z390 chipset
Taking the i5 8400 as an example the normal pattern for the turbo mode is 3.8Ghz for all cores or 4.0Ghz for one core. However some H370 boards such as the Asus ROG STRIX H370-F Gaming feature multi-core enhancement that by default will run all six cores at 4.00Ghz. Are you speaking from first-hand...

Re: Intel i5-8400 stock cooler vs. ?
I decided to try the U9S, as much for its compactness as anything else. I've only farted around with it for a few hours but so far its seems a stellar upgrade to the Intel stock. At idle its holding the CPU 15-20C over ambient @ <300rpm. Gaming load the fan is ~400rpm with the CPU ~35C over ambient....

Re: Intel i5-8400 stock cooler vs. ?
I re-read the SPCR reviews for two Noctuas. Although it was a long time ago, seems Lawrence wasn't overjoyed with the sound of the NF-F12 fan whereas Mike sounded pretty impressed with the NF-A9. Looking at these results , it seems the 12cm has only a ~2degree advantage at 17dBA (though that advanta...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
So long as the case can accomodate it, which the Define C can, 140mm is better than 120mm for airflow and silence. The Define C's "accommodation" is a little screwy though: The max width of the front fan aperture is 120mm. Minor perhaps, but if we are splitting hairs, in order to realize the full p...

Re: Intel i5-8400 stock cooler vs. ?
Bit of a late follow up... I tried the Intel stock cooler. It is the worst Intel stock cooler I have ever encountered, all the way back to the very first LGA775. Horrible, acute growling sound starting somewhere under 1000rpm. Gaming workload drives it to 1300-1600 where it is easily heard over ambi...

Re: Manufacture Guaranteed Durable Thermal Paste?
The question has nothing to do with a brand replacing their paste under warranty. But your subject line says "Manufacture Guaranteed Durable...". For me, the word 'guarantee' implies replacement or other restitution if/when the product fails to meet the terms of a written warranty, so discussing ex...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
Indeed the length of the PSU is a factor here in that a long one with modular connections at the back may limit just how far forward the drive cage can be moved. I didnt move mine back at all (yet) and I found it a fairly tight fit (with an RM650x). Point of clarification: lets call the "shroud" the...

I wish i could articulate that without sounding rude as i really don't wish to be. :) No worries. Re: poor asus website support
what is the meaning for a user of better "better VRM section"? The power components surrounding, and feeding the CPU. The F has more phases (double the chokes and Mosfets) which, in theory, means they will each not work as hard/get as hot and thus (maybe) last longer, but like I said that is anecdo...

Arctic Silvers' instructions (which have hardly changed in over a decade) make no mention whatsoever of a shelf life, or of a reapplication interval. They do talk about storage, but ultimately state that separation of the particles from the suspension fluid [quote] "...does not affect the performanc...

Re: poor asus website support
the reason you choose the F version is because it's more gaming features? If you mean compared to the TUF H370-Pro, not really. I dont care about lights etc. I went with the F because it has (anecdotally) better VRM section, higher spec audio chip, and I dont use WiFi at all anyway. As far as fan h...

Re: poor asus website support
I recently purchased their H370-F and was actually quite impressed with their two QVLs (RAM and Devices). Keep in mind QVLs in general are never comprehensive. How much "unbalance" is normal these days?
Just opened a couple Fractal X2 140mm and holding them I can feel a slight vibration consistent with an unbalanced rotating assembly (and ironically thanks to its white blade color you can see a slight unevenness in its rotation). Is this normal these days for a fan of this level or should I expect ...

Dynamic X2 vs. Redux vs. Noctua
Looking to add a 140mm to the front of my new Define C. The regular Noctua A14 is running C$33 which feels pretty steep when the Redux P14s is only C$19 right now (and it seems some people actually prefer it to the A14?)... BUT I can get a Dynamic X2 through work for a cool C$13 right now which is p...

Re: Intel® Core™ i5-8600 65w vs. 95 w
I'll just add for clarity that a watt is a watt is a watt. If a CPU, or a light bulb for that matter, is giving off 100Watts of heat...then it is also consuming 100watts of electricity. The confusion arises when people look at TDP and think "that is exactly the maximum this CPU will consume" when in...

I'm experimenting right now with an 8500 and it WILL, if asked to, go well over its 65W TDP indefinitely . ... TDP is over 100w without any throttling. :) How do you measure the CPU's power consumption? What motherboard do you have? Not power consumption per sé, but TDP as reported by Intel XTU (al...

An interesting test was done by Alex Moore while reviewing the NF-A12x25, Noctua NF-A12x25 Case Fan Review Interesting, good thorough reporting. Results I think slightly skewed because he is comparing the standard (in Noctua terms) 140 to their super high-end 120. In the broad context of 2x140 vs 3...

Re: Intel® Core™ i5-8600 65w vs. 95 w
b) The CPU is allowed to draw more than the TDP by using the maximum boost frequency, but only for a few seconds at a time. If the task at hand is not completed in those few seconds the speed will be throttled so that the power consumption is at TDP. With higher TDP the CPU will thus draw more when...
