i wouldn't be surprised if it made your temps hotter.. it would be pulling hot air directly off of your GPU.

i really think getting an HR-01 is your best bet. unless you are willing to underclock/undervolt your CPU.

then there's always water...

I'll draw you an ASCII picture of the softmount method I'm talking about (it's easier than digging up the thread) X = the large end of a plastic wire tie | = case || = fan housing --- = wire tie I = rubber washer/half of a grommet/other appropriate dampening material step 1: ---||X Thread a wire tie...

Also, you can employ the rubber-washer-2x-cable-tie method of fan decoupling. It's extremely cheap and surprisingly effective. (and doesn't look nearly as ghetto as it sounds). I second Shadowknight's suggestion of having a fan controller. The sunbeam rheobus is extremely effective (and cheap - $13 ...

That's interesting about eVGA shafting Europe with that warranty stuff. Wonder what the issue is. If I remember correctly, all of the 79900gt cards come factory overclocked now. The premium you pay is based on the amount of overclock that particular board has. The problems people were experiencing w...

I'd recommend heading over to the head-fi.org forums (specifically the Computer-as-Source subforum) and chatting those guys up regarding your sound card needs. (while the AV-710 and the EMU404 are both highly recommended source cards, they may or may not meet your recording needs) A larger case will...

Just make sure to keep your fans from rotating when you blast them with the compressed air. Begin urban PC myth: Typical PC user with a typical desktop system buys some compressed air to clean his case. He opens it up and sprays air at everything that looks dusty, especially the fans. The user finis...

If you're looking for a 7900GT, try to get one of the revised boards - the first runs of these GPUs had some fairly notorious failure rates. nVidia has recognized that there was a problem and have taken steps to neutralize it. Honestly, I wouldn't buy any video card other than an EVGA. They simply k...

At this point, I completely agree that AM2 is not worth it. It will be interesting to see if AM2 is inherently crap or just needs time to mature. I'm currently testing my processor at 2.4GHz, I should be able to get it stable at that speed fairly easily. I assume that will be relatively close to the...

I should probably just wait anyway.

I've got a decent dx9 card in the 6800gt and I can't say that I have gotten my money's worth out of it yet.

With Vista/dx10 coming out within the year (maybe), I'm even less sure about making the jump off the sinking ship of AGP at this point.

I'm not convinced at the OC potential of my RAM, (I actually have the same RAM as you, ultrachrome, just half as much ;) ) so I may not try to OC the system.

Looks like all the people whining about AGP on that board need to read a few FAQs. I wouldn't call it completely painless, but the board certainly does provide an interesting upgrade option. Passively cooled northbridge is also nice. Unfortunately, I'm an ASUS fanboy, so I'm obviously looking at the...

Looking to make the jump to PCI-E as painless as possible. I'm currently running a Venice 3000+ on an ASUS A8V, with a 6800GT video card in an SLK-3000B Looking to upgrade the card to a 7900GT, will likely put a VF900 on it. I have absolutely no plans to do SLI and I obviously want to stay in socket...

I'm trying to steer my colleagues away from the cheapest solution, but other than "They're $5, of course they suck!", I don't have any real numbers/experiences/etc to back up what I'm sure is true. Sorry, the term "monitor" has a different meaning here than I'm used to in a work environment. We're talking about a ~40" plasma TV, basically. The area it will be occupying will be a good bit larger than a PC case, I'm sure we will need multiple fans to create enough negative pressure to get an ade...

fx5900xt - acceptable temperature range? | UPDATED

finally got to the point where my nvsilencer was the loudest component in my system, so a few splices later, I have it connected into my sunbeam rheobus. Noise is much better at ~7v, but I am unsure as to what temperatures I should shoot for. ambient temperature is about 33C at 7v, I'm idling at aro...

I couldn't agree more. For better or worse, however, PC building seems to be inching its way further and further into the mainstream. I'm working on my SLK3000B that I recently received. I put 2 coats of black PlastiDip on the inside, but I'm not very confident that it will be a good vibration damper.
