New Linux Undervolting/OC'ing for AMD CPU's

I thought this might interest folks in this forum: The TurionPowerControl program supports both under-volting and over-clocking of AMD CPUs. Currently supported by this program are AMD K8L (11h) and K10 (10h) CPUs, which includes the Turion RM, Turion ZM, Phenom, Phenom II, and Athlon II brands. Ori...

Be careful with the mobo. I had an Asus M3A78 that put an extra 0.05V into the CPU at stock (with no way to undervolt). Good for OC'ers, not good for passive cooling. I was passively cooling an X2 5000 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 and I burned it up while installing Fedora :(

Either place you mount the fan probably won't get too much air over the GPU (but it may be enough). The ATX design makes it hard to get air to that area. Some other ideas include using zip ties to tie a fan to the hard disk cage or you could just rest the fan on the bottom of your case by the GPU, a...

I'd suggest the Asus VH242H as an alternative monitor. It's 23.6", ideal for gaming, has consistently received good reviews on Newegg, and can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk for just over £187 at the moment. The Dell monitor use an IPS panel, whereas the Asus one uses a TN panel. TN panels are che...

ATI's closed-source Linux video drivers will do PowerPlay (power management) and 3D. They won't do HD video accel though.

Based on this: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3615&p=3 , I would go with a 785G board with DDR3 and sideport memory.

Sorry to hear your frustration. :( I just got one of these drives and I love it. It is quieter than my Spinpoint HD321KJ, and much quieter than my old WD 2500KS (RIP). I'm curious as to the manufacture date and model# on your drive. In the review, the label of the SCPR drive says "Model: HD502HI/Y" ...

I have a Brisbane 5000 ("Black Edition") and I'm wondering what to undervolt it to. I'm not really in the mood to do a lot of mprime testing, I was just wondering what values I should set cpupowerd to in order to get more undervolting than the stock C'n'Q, yet not risk making the system unstable.

Advice Needed for Home/Office Build

I'm packing up my essential possessions and moving soon, so I wanted to build a micro ATX rig to give me a little more room in my car. I used to be a frequent poster on these forums, but I've been really into Debian/Ubuntu/GNU Linux lately, so I have not had the time to read up on my silencing compo...

To get good dynamic undervolting in Linux, you need to roll your own kernel and modify the powernow-k8 module source

What video card, HD and PSU do you have? The CPU should be very easy to cool quietly with a tower heatsink and a quiet 120mm fan running on 5V.

I used a JaPanaflo 80mm in my Seasonic SS-400 and that does the job very well. I bought an S12II-380 thinking it would be as quiet and it was not. I ended up using the old PSU in my new system, even if it doesn't have sleeved cables or fancy Molex connectors.

Seagate is the only manufacturer who gives you a 5-year warranty on SATA drives (let me know if there are others!).
WD has a 5 year warranty on its RAID edition (RE) products.

EDIT: Also Hitachi on its Ultrastar series.

In the nsk 4480 there are silicon mounts for the harddisks ... so that's not the issue. also the samsung disk is not a noisy one. I'd run the OS on the RAID for the read speed benefit.

I really question the choice of RAID 5. Do you really need to read that much data per second at a sustained rate in an HTPC? I second shen's recommendation for RAID 10 or RAID 0+1.

You can never have enough cache, but it can be pricey, as you can see. $80 for 2MB of cache seems a little steep to me, but not completely unreasonable. I think we're comparing the wrong processors here. Why consider the older, overpriced E6600 when you can get an E6550 that runs at nearly the same...

The answer for both is stability. When the PD's came out with TDP's over 100W, the 8-pin CPU was added. It's not necessary unless you have a CPU that draws over 100W (i.e. original Pentium D or quad core). Intel used to have a doc on it at their site, but I can't find it. And the 4-pin Molex near th...

The IP35-Pro is listed as compatible on Thermalright's Ultra120eX mobo page.

Also, unless you want to run dual graphics cards with your PSU, 620W is overkill. The 520W model will work just fine.
