Here's my two cents: About Dell (and, presumable HP and similar companies): My sister bought a Dell Optiplex in August, and it is reasonably quiet. Dell now sells AMD CPUs which have been a good choice for a quite PC for awhile now. Also, the new Intel Core Duo CPUs run much cooler than the older (P...

Here's a link to someone who went with the Asus board over the Tyan: (edit: updated link) http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/77909585/m/583009077731 Not sure s/he had Linux as a primary concern though. You're right...it is an odd choice. But I won't be overclocking. My concerns are silence, stability, and Linux compatibility. I'm also considering the Asus A8N-SLI Premium, but I've read quite a bit in forums that suggests it's been quirky with Linux. (Also I don't need SLI) But I'm sure any real pr...

Tyan Tomcat K8E S2865

Does anybody know anything about this board? I'm considering it because I've read so many positive things about it's stability and Linux compatibility. The problem is I won't be able to use the X-120, Scythe Ninja, or simular larger heat sinks. I should be able to use he XP90. Will that be enough to...

Thanks. Ubuntu does handle hardware pretty well. About the board...I'm asking because I've read that there are problems with some of the integrated devices on the board. The raid, in particular, was supposed to be buggy because it is software based (or something to that effect). I was reading anothe...

Linux and Passive Motherboards

I hope to build an AMD64 system this summer. Linux has been my primary operating system for almost a year now, and I'd like to keep it that way. So I'm trying to limit compatibility problems by picking well supported hardware. (My main distro is SUSE.) I'm leaning towards the Asus A8N SLI Premium be...

I haven't been able to find anything about the nforce4 chipset either. I'm sure Corsair is fine--they do make good RAM and as was said AMD notes that it's list is not complete. I just seem to remember reading a few post where people were having problems with Corsair and AMD--it could have been a def...

I'll have to check out Corsair again. They are listed by Abit as a compatable memory maker. I was originally considering using Corsiar XMS until I noticed that it did not use AMD approved memory modules.

thanks-

Athlon 64 Compatable Ram (What should I use?)

I'm trying to decide what RAM to use in my Athlon64 system. To ensure compatablity and stablity, I'd like to use a brand that use AMD approved memory modules. (AMD's website lists AMD64 Processor Compatible DDR Memory Modules .) I'm also looking to use RAM that is listed as supported by my motherboa...

another question...

sorry if i'm being bothersome...

I noticed you opted for the passive XFX 6600. Is there a reason you choose it instead of Gigabyte's passive 6600: does XFX solution keep the VGA core cooler? or did you just need the dual DVI?

many thanks-

Possible stupid question....

In order to use the xp-120, do you have to make any changes to this board that would void the warranty?

thanks!

heat created by a passively video card--a problem?

Hi, I’m wondering if there is a thread giving general recommendation for getting appropriate airflow to move/exhaust the heat created by a passively video card. Perhaps, I’m just being a bit paranoid, but I’m concerned about all that heat just sitting there—it would seem to me that could cause some ...

I read over the thread and I did not see the GIGABYTE GV-N66256DP Geforce 6600 mentioned. I think the PCI-e version was mentioned, but this is an APG card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125189 It is not dual DVI. Sorry if I missed mention of this card eariler in the thread.

GIGABYTE GV-N66256DP Geforce 6600

The GIGABYTE GV-N66256DP Geforce 6600 is also passively cooled, and it is APG.

I'm considering using it in my new system. However, I'm worried about all that heat just sitting around. What kind of case fans would one need with a card like this?
