Re: SilverStone Fortress FT02 Revisited

The article mentions improved bottom fans, but doesn't say how they're different. Are the improvements noticeable/worthwhile? Also, any word on when this updated version is supposed to be available in the US? I can only seem to find them in Europe/Asia/Australia. [ edit : Based on reviews at Amazon ...

I found a guide to adjusting Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 fan behavior in its BIOS:

s479 (which i may add, is not an option in the poll) Yeah, I knew I wouldn't think of all of them, so I threw in the "other" option as an attempt to catch these. A poll can't be edited after it is established, but if we get a significant number of "others", I'll go through the comments (I asked peo...

So far, it looks like Socket A is still a pretty popular platform, second only to K8. And I can understand the K8's popularity. I built a Venice 3000+ machine for my brother a few months ago, and while it performs much better than my Barton 3200+, I was unable to get it past the low 40's with it's (...

In terms of cards themselves, you may want to reconsider. If this is a platform you're sticking with for a few years, the 7800GS is the best you can get. However, if it's just something to hold you over for a few months, the 6800(vanilla) and the X1600 cost about half as much and are still magnitude...

The first thing I notice is that the reviewer is woefully misinformed about how refrigeration works. There are actually refrigeration-driven CPU coolers out there (like vapochill), but I hear they're noisy as hell. Nice misleading chart on page 3... It's an interesting idea to move the peltiers off ...

Which CPU socket do you use?

I've noticed that heatsinks compatible with socket 478/754/939/940/775 count as "universal" these days. As an Athlon XP holdout (plays FEAR, HL2 Doom 3, UT 2004 and Far Cry just fine, thank-you-very-much), I was wondering how may SPCR readers use sockets inside versus outside this specification. If ...

Mats, would you mind posting some pictures of your ducted CM80? It sounds like something that could really catch on, given Arcitc Cooling's (the only one using a duct so far) low-quality assembly.

Noisy Fan Controller?

I was trying to root out this pesky whine emanating from my computer, and eventually noticed that it diminished and disappeared as I turned the voltages up on my Vantec Nexus fan controller (though the fans get louder at the same time, so this isn't a solution.) After removing a few parts and listen...

Yeah, as long as the operating temperature of your CPU stays below 233C (which might rule out Prescotts), you aren't setting anything on fire.

I guess it could be used to run a refrigeration unit, like a Vapochill. I think those things currently have their own power supplies. Or maybe if you wanted to build a PC with a built-in 21" CRT (a giant iMac?).

Well, I thought I'd give everybody an update: I went and bought the Antec p180 (only $100, used the search box at the bottom of the SPCR page), and am pretty satisfied with the quality. Here is a list of some supposedly quiet fans that you might try to find locally. I believe a fan only needs to be labeled as "quiet" to make the list, so do your research, but I think this is a good place to start. The Panaflo FBA08A12L1A in particular is very popular on this site, and seems to be ...

I took my power supply apart last night, and the fan only had screws on one side, so I couldn't flip it. Also, the wires to the fan were soldered to the board, so it wouldn't have been a simple matter of rearranging a plug. Actually, I had already looked at placing the fan next to the HS so that it ...

So lousy CPU, lousy heatsink, lousy case. This is what I get for being cheap. Actually the heatsink wasn't cheap, but seemed promising based on what I knew at the time.

K, I'm gonna try Isaac's "Radical Plan" now. I only have 2 fans, so I guess I'll just seal off that other front intake.
