Practice. I wanted to see how to install it before attempting it in my real system with delicate electronics around. It turned out to be very easy, but some heatsinks are not and they require alot of force.jmke wrote:CGameProgrammer wrote: but why were you trying to install the heatsink without a motherboard?

What do you mean, yours didn't come with one? The LED itself is hidden behind the power switch but there's should be a cable that says "PLED" or something like that, to go with the "POWER SW" and "RESET SW" cables. When plugging it into the motherboard, the label should face the opposite direction a...

I too have the Asus A8N-SLI Premium, and with no CPU fan whatsoever, just a single undervolted exhaust fan, the motherboard was 38 C. With an undervolted intake fan, it went down to 36 C. And that was, again, with no CPU fan at all. So the heatpipe is situated quite well enough for the exhaust fan t...

Well I figured out how to install it. Before, I was practicing by attempting to install the heatsink on the retention bracket outside of the motherboard, and I couldn't get it to work. But then it occured to me that maybe the CPU would elevate the heatsink higher up and maybe that would make it a ti...

No, I already knew that much, and I read that review and several others. I found a picture in this review of the heatsink installed in the retention bracket; it's the second to last picture. You can see it the flat part rests on top of the screw head, so I guess it's supposed to, but I can't make th...

I can't figure out how to install a Hyper 48 in a K8 board
My Coolermaster Hyper 48 cooler arrived today but I can't figure out how to install it. When I place it in the K8 retention bracket, it rocks back and forth on top of the two screws (it rests on the heads of them) and I can't make the steel clips stay on. Can someone explain how it's supposed to be ...

It looks like the heatsinks mentioned here are completely out of the question due to the 7800GT. I actually have the Asus Top Silent 7800GT in my case, and it just barely fits over the tiny Arctic Cooling Freezer 64, and I had to remove the fan from it since I couldn't raise the heatpipe arm otherwi...

I chose the Coolermaster Hyper 48, which I'll put one of my Nexus 92mm fans on. It's similar to the XP-90 but it's supposed to be easier to install, which I like, and it'll blow air away from the motherboard, cooling both the CPU (suck) and GPU (blow) so it should work rather well. I'll see when it ...

Oh, I thought the reviews mentioned the motherboard actually had to be removed. In any case they all say it's alot more difficult clipping into place, while the Hyper 48 is supposed to be easy. And considering I had trouble just with the Freezer 64, another "easy" one, I was reluctant to try the XP....

Need a good HSF that blows away from the motherboard
I'm looking for a good heatsink/fan that blows away from the motherboard. The XP-90 and -120 are obvious examples, but I'm hoping to find something that doesn't require me to remove the motherboard. CPU is an AMD Socket 939. I know of the Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC but does it blow away fro...

I'd consider 63/83 acceptable load temperatures, but they got to that point just from 10 minutes of playing a game, and that was with the exhaust fan at 11V, which is loud. The XP120 did occur to me, but it's wide. My motherboard positions the CPU near the top, and the P150 positions the PSU just ab...

The old one's noise-relevant specs were: Case: Antec SLK3000B Motherboard: Gigabyte nForce4 with stock fanless NB heatsink CPU: Athlon 3500 with Freezer 64 cooler @ 5V GPU: Gigabyte 6600GT with stock fanless heatpipe HDD: Samsung P80 in SmartDriv...

On the other hand, you do usually mention at a review's end if there are problems or anamolies reported in the forums. BTW the 250 GB model is available on NewEgg for $100 , even though the older original article lists the 200GB model as being $110. That model is actually discontinued now, I'm prett...

Wow, that is a lot of dust for only 7 months operation. Do you live in an area with particularly bad air quality? Not really, but the system is in my bedroom, which is a bit messy, and it's on the floor on thick carpet, and there are two cats that crawl around alot. Today my new P150, MB, and GPU w...

My first build: dust sanctuary
Here are a couple of photos of my system, the first system I'd ever put together. It's been running for over 7 months, 24/7, never cleaned, and apparently putting an intake fan next to the unfiltered side air vent had certain consequences. The system was on when the pictures were taken and the fans ...

One good reason is ATI's drivers suck. I am never again using an ATI card because I just found it too painful, with their Windows drivers, Linux drivers, and their drivers for their TV capture card. They make good hardware, possibly the best hardware, but it's all for naught due to their horrible so...

It's easy and safe just taping a 120mm fan to the bottom of the case, but I found it slightly more ideal suspending it an inch or two off the bottom, on the aforementioned FB123 bracket. I have the passively-cooled Gigabyte 6600GT and I use the fan bracket with a 120mm Nexus to blow air over the car...

Not possible without drilling something somewhere; the legs have no holes for screws at all, and the holes in the case are used for the LED wires. And I don't have a drill and wouldn't use one even if I did, since it would involve uninstalling everything from the case before drilling. I have Gorilla...

Well the Liquid Nails stuff wasn't quite strong enough. After 8-10 hours of letting it set, I tried to stand the case up very carefully, yet two of the feet came off very quickly, which is frustrating. The other two are still on firmly but they'd probably come off easily too. The problem might be th...

Thanks for the link, BrianE. At first Gorilla Glue looked great, but it appears it takes 4 hours to set. I need something that sets like within a minute, just because I have no good way of holding the feet on besides by hand. I tried cyanoacrylate but it was way too weak, so tonight I'll try Liquid ...

I visited the two links you gave and neither website appeared to have any laptop CD drives for sale.
