3) the pwm is a pulse signal that tells the fan to turn on and off with full 12 volts pulses. The time that it is off is varied (longer off = slower fan, longer on = faster fan). Why do this? well it allows varying the fan speed technically all the way down to stop. whereas the 3 pin version has to...

Re: 3-pin vs. 4-pin fan connectors, what's the difference?

tempoct wrote:4-pin on mobo is the new PWM fan connector. It takes different type of fan. I believe you can plug 3-pin in but it will always run at full speed. PWM is new kind of speed control
But, couldn't you control speed of the 3-pin fans via the motherboard? Why do we need the 4th pin to do that?

3-pin vs. 4-pin fan connectors, what's the difference?

First question, what name do I use to differentiate between four pin connectors that plug into the power supply, versus four pin connectors that plug into fan connectors on the motherboard? In this post, when I talk about 4 pin connectors, I'm talking about the type that plug into the motherboard. N...

So if I understand correctly, in order to reduce the CPU fan speed, I will need to purchase a fan controller to reduce the voltage to the CPU fan. Is that correct? I've never used on of those fan controllers, so I'm not 100% sure what they do. But, you can also just use an adapter that will downvol...

Okay, thanks guys. I order the Seasonic S12 380. jackylman - nice catch about the heatsinks. I looked a little for that info and even after you've mentioned it, I can't find it. I'd probably get the 380 anyway, but since it sounds like it'll be even quieter than a 330, all the better. andyb - people...

Great, I thought it would be. But every damn body is buying a 400 and even 430 watt PSU these days. The place I'm going to buy them, the 380 is only $10 more than the 330, so I just figure I'll get the 380.

SeaSonic S12 380 Watt for C2D E6300 with nVidia 7300 LE?

Core 2 Duo E6300
2 x 512MB DDR2
nVidia 7300 LE
7200 RPM PATA hard disk (upgrade to 1, possibly 2 SATA drives in future)
Samsung DVD Burner

Is the Seasonic 312 380 Watt PSU enough, or do I need to move up to the 430 Watt?

Retail HSF on Core 2 Duo

I saw on tomshardware.com that the retail HSF never gets above 2400 RPM's when the CPU is under load. And, that the fan speed is controlled via that fourth pin on the fan connector. How quiet is this fan normally? 2400 RPM on a 80mm fan (at maximum use, thus normally much slower) is pretty quiet to ...

I've dealt with these 3 hdds, and I can easily say the 7200.7 is quietest of the lot. This is my suspicion. I plan on stop being lazy, and stop just posting on message boards to magically find the answer. Lay the three hard drives out on a table and listen to them. Personally I don't think ATA33 wo...

Fireball 3 vs Barracuda 7200.7 vs DiamondMax Plus 9 on ATA33

I'm getting a new hard drive for my XP box, so I'm going to move one of the old hard drives off it to my Linux box to replace a loud whining hard drive on it. The Linux box does have an ATA33 hard drive controller (it's a dual Pentium III 550 box, the XP box is more modern, ATA133 controller) The Fi...

Recommended Temps for Pentium III 550 (Katmai)

I just installed passive cooling (e.g., heatsink with no fan) on my dual pentium iii 550 (katmai) processors. One processor works fine, and maxes out under load at 34 degrees. You add the second processor, and after 25 minutes its at 50 degrees and still climbing. However, according to the big yello...

Well, I finally found a thread on SPCR where somebody asked this about a year ago. No idea why he got responses to his question so fast: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=14249 Really, I'm thinking thermal tape was supposed to come with these fans though. The guy asking the question i...

Well, I think I figured out that I can wrap the thermal sensor wire around the enermax fan and tape the sensor to one of the corners of the case. I plan on doing this for all my exhaust fans that blow air out of the fan case. Have also found out that my hard drive between the other two hard drives i...

Where to mount thermal sensors?

I just got those Enermax fans from newegg that are so cheap with the remote thermal sensors, hoping to install them tomorrow. But, am not sure where to mount the thermal sensors. I'm hoping to get the CPU heatsink fan sensor under the heatsink, next to the CPU. One of the computers is definitely goi...

Interesting. I had decided to just forget getting the $1 cables and just purchase some more expensive ones later. But, if I can test the cables myself.... A problem is that I don't know the nature of IDE cables though. I know that some electronics, like CPU's, are "solid state". That if they work ou...

Jab-tech is guaranteeing that you receive a fan made in Japan (which is apparently supposed to be better than the ones made in China) for $8, plus any special power connector you can add on the same page.

These cables will most likely be a hit or miss sort of thing. Okay, thanks Kaizer, think I'm gonna pass on the PC Toys cables. Besides their just not being enough information on the internet about them, I'm guessing your right. I looked at the reviews you posted, and the cables will probably be hit...

Yeah, what m0002a posted is about what I've read. The specification does say flat cables, but they've gotten around this by adding shielding and some other stuff so that they can make the cables round. Basically, my understanding is that there is no claim that round IDE cables implement the specific...

Cheap PC Toys Round IDE Cables

I've seen round IDE cables from more known / better respected brands, however, at a minimum of $10 a cable, and the fact that I need 6, I just don't feel like spending the $70 it would cost right now. However, I found some round PC Toys cables that are only $1 a cable. I've googled around and found ...
