Re: WD RED noise: new ones are louder?
I too am extremely disappointed with the new reds. Bought the 6TB variant, nine of them last year for a new NAS, and holy moly they're LOUD! Mine were manufactured 25 Aug 2015 with the model number WD60EFRX - 68MYMN1 Unfortunately these were for replacing an aging but quiet NAS, populated with 4x 2T...

Here's the part I don't get. You are ready to dish out 300-350$ on a pci-x raid controller, but then you aren't ready to dish out the bucks for a decent motherboard supporting pci-x, it has the double the bandwith of regular pci-slot, take advantage of it! While you are at it, go all the way. Well,...

Thanks for all the comments and hints! The SX8300 uses PCI-X, but as far as I know, PCIX is backwards compatible with PCI, so that should work with an Epia board (and if it doesn't, I'll just buy an ordinary ATX board, since the Epias are so ridiculously cheap anyway :-)) As for the suggestions of g...

Advice needed for selecting a fanless CPU & Mobo combo.
I'm looking to build a quiet file server, using a P180 chassi hosting a FastTrak SX8300 and eight Seagate 7200.7 400GB drives in a raid5 config. Now my main problem is selecting a fanless CPU and motherboard combination which works with this setup. Since I will be having 8 disks generating heat, I'l...

Thanks for the valuable feedback Mike. The stuff in that post is actually something I've tried to parse together from SPCR for years! I think it would be great if you could make a short summary such as this every 6-12 months in order to "recap" the current state of affairs, since a lot of new stuff ...

My problem is that I was planning to create a list of PC assemblies for building PCs with a cost / reduced dBA matrix. This in order to help friends and colleagues get affordable computers which doesn't make you go "deaf" (or make people less productive since the constant noise reduces the brains ab...

Recommended sound level meters?
Hi, I've been looking around for a sound level meter to be used for measuring ambient levels and PC noise. However, I've only been able to find metering equipment ranging *from* 50dBA upwards (such as Radio schack's stuff ), which is pretty useless for measuring noise levels in the 20-35dBA range. A...
