I backed into this fine article soon after I began searching for an SFF to replace an old desktop (no gaming, just simple 2D work at most). mATX is bigger than I want. miniITX looked great, but cost more than I am willing to afford. So I settled on Shuttle's SK21G and discovered the Turion on their ...

Re: Two not-loud dual-Opteron workstations.
It's really nice that this case can take eight hot-swappable SATA drives... eight hot-swappable 7200 RPM notebook drives.... yummy! At work this would have value, but at home I am less enthused. Using RAID 10, I don't mind taking my time to replace a failed drive and powering down my server for a s...

Re: Two not-loud dual-Opteron workstations.
Well, I've looked at the fan headers on the motherboard, and descriptions in the manual, but for the life of me I can't figure out a) whether they're beefy enough to handle 12cm fans, and b) whether they can control fans with only three wires. If I read the manual correctly -- and I'm not convinced...

Re: Two not-loud dual-Opteron workstations.
Sorry for taking so long to respond! I was whisked away to my sister-in-law's wedding in Pennsylvania, and Internet-access was sketchy at best. I'll try to make up for it by adding a follow-up. That's understandable, Irianta. A week ago I was off visiting relatives in Portland, OR. Any spare time f...

Hi, you wanted a quiet, powerful, 80mm rear faned PSU that's EPS compatable? Looks like Antec heard you as the Antec NeoHE 500 (and 550) bigger brothers of the recently reviewed NeoHE 430 are just that! It is mentioned in the review. The NeoHE and Super Silencer seem well suited for Chenbro SR107. ...

I installed it yesterday, just as silent as my 4200rpm toshiba, and even quieter on seeks. The seek noise is almost non-existant, it's really wierd. Completely inaudible from 2+ feet away in my silentdrive. Performs GREAT. I notice the response increase compared to my raptor, but it's not annoying ...

Re: Two not-loud dual-Opteron workstations.
Not without modifications to the case, absolutely. I think the material is there though. A thermal probe attached to the Fortron PSU shows that it's running at ~30.5°C at idle, ambient room temperature being slightly below 25°C. Replace it with a more efficient unit, add a sheet of cardboard to bet...

Re: Two not-loud dual-Opteron workstations.
Both of these systems were built for future flexibility. In the long-term we have all kinds of plans: better separate the PSU from the motherboard space, get a passive PSU, dual-core processors, add some weight to the side panels of the chassis, maybe experiment with a duct between the exhaust fan ...

As I plan for an upcoming app server, I am favoring SATA 2.5" drives because of their power efficiency and relative silence. The Travelstar 5K100 currently appeals to me. However, I am keeping my eye on the Samsung 2.5" SATA drives.
