If your going to go the Conroe route you should checkout the SMP client, with the current wu's you're looking at an easy 1500-2000 ppd versus 700-800 ppd with the GPU client, which needs a core to feed the GPU. I have had this problem off & on so I did a little search and found 2 possible fixes, I have only ever had to used the first solution so I don't know if the 2nd works or not. why do you want to use the sceensaver? I disable the screensaver on all my windows machines, I just shut off the monitor off when not in use.
