Re: New PC build

I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I wait until I notice increased fan noise and then I clean the case :D

It's about once/yr.

Re: New PC build

Yeah, lots of different ways to clean out dust..with tradeoffs. - end of plastic vacuum hose can have static charge - compressed air can over spin fans. Easy fix for this is to hold onto the fan so it doesn't spin. An anti-static wrist strap is pretty cheap and easy to use for anyone messing around ...

Re: New PC build

Yep, the gfx card is in the wrong slot. The one it's in provides PCIe 4.0 x 4 lanes. If you ever put an additional card in any of the adjacent slots it drops to PCIe 4.0 x 1. However, in the current slot you are just losing a few percent of performance. PCIe 4.0 x 4 bandwidth = PCIe 3.0 x 8 = PCIe 2...

The rear case fan is pointed right at him. There's a significant reduction in noise when the source is baffled by the case.

Re: Advice for FANLESS fast i3 or i5 PC

I have now (pre)-ordered a NUC11-i5 Later (when cases available) I will have to move it to Akasa; I see there are 2 new cases for NUC11th: Newton TN and Plato TN, which one you think will be a better thermal choice? (I have no form factor preference) At the moment - on paper - I like Plato better T...

Of the two, the NUC + Akasa is the better thermal choice, plus a bigger bump in processing power if/when you need it.

Re: Advice for FANLESS fast i3 or i5 PC

An alternative approach would be to go with the mITX form factor, an open case, and no fans except for the CPU (and if you get a mobo with fan stop feature, then it'd be passive except times of prolonged high load). Here's the concept: CPU Intel Core i5-10400 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor $149.99 @ Best ...

Re: Advice for FANLESS fast i3 or i5 PC

Well, you could look at Zotac's Zbox mini-PC offerings. I haven't kept up on their current products. In the past, they relied upon a hunk of metal as the heatsink and a plastic case. Somewhere around the 10W-15W TDP range, a hunk of metal in a plastic case may not thermally cut it and you need heatp...

Re: Advice for FANLESS fast i3 or i5 PC

Thanks @CA_Steve: I see you suggest the NUC option. Since I have no space constraints, do you believe it will be cheaper than a mini-itx solution? (C) Cheaper? I don't know. You'd have to price 'em out and see. You don't list what apps you are using or what you aspire to (other than CPUMark of 6000...

F is the best solution as it places the front of the PC toward you and has something to block any direct path noise and you don't have to deal with potential long video cable issues. Sound deadening material: Whatever you use, make sure to leave a few cm between the PC and the material. If the sound...

Re: New PC build

If you stuck with the stock case fans, they are DC controlled. Here's a couple of things to try: - let the motherboard do the control -> set it on Silent rather than manual - I note that the case fan control is starting at 30+%. I'd hope you can start it lower...Asus' window's utility will test the ...

Re: MB died after 5 years need help upgrading PC

I presume MB or CPU. It could also be the PSU. You might check and see if the PSU connections to the motherboard are secure as well as the power cord to the PSU. After that, it's a fault isolation problem. It could be the PSU isn't providing proper power to the mobo. It could be the mobo has an iss...

The velcro trick is nice. Decoupling the base from your desk with a 1/2" mat of rubber or similar can help. The ultimate is stick the drive somewhere else - like a closet.

Re: How exactly does Turing GPU's Power Limit work?

Thank you for such detailed explanation, but I don't fully understand it :) By reducing the power limit, I reduced maxiumum voltage, so frequency the card is able to reach? So I reduced maximum fps my card can provide. Is it right? Somewhere during the gpu chip's test, or the gfx card's test, or bo...

Re: How exactly does Turing GPU's Power Limit work?

A couple of things to consider. 1) Power curve: - Power consumption is proportional to voltage ^2 x frequency. - CPUs and GPUs follow a programmed stepping: want freq x? Set the voltage to y. This happens on a dynamic basis as the workload changes. - Card mfgrs may opt to tune the cards to always me...

Also, be aware that Intel changes the CPU package thickness every few years. Sometimes requiring a really thin plastic spacer so you can't over tighten and crack it. Just be careful and you should be ok.

Re: Monitors with built in KVM switch

Oh, there is one minefield you'd have to transverse with a TV: HDR without a Displayport input. I went though this 2 years ago, so here's the gist of it as I remember. - If the TV has HDMI 2.1 (rare on lower sized, lower priced TVs), and you have HDMI 2.1 on your PCs, you're set. - If the TV has HDM...

Does anyone else have any knowledge of KVM monitors? Nope. :) Have you considered getting a 40" class TV to use as a monitor instead? Downside is having to switch the TV input and also a KVM for the mouse and keyboard. Upsides are potential for lower cost and similar or better display quality and l...

A couple of additional points.. Noctua is awesome when it comes to keeping their coolers compatible with current CPUs.
