Re: Fast, Silent, HDPlex H5 system - Skylake 6700 K w/heatpi

Any more pics of the build?

I'd really like to build one of these for my living room setup.

The only thing that puts me off, is no optical drive.

I'm hoping to see SPCR review of the new VelociRaptor.

I love the 300-gig earlier model I have for speed, but the noise is at the upper margin of what I consider acceptable.

Re: Video Card research is giving me a headache

I've tried to figure out which card is best for me just by reading, but my brain is going to explode - The last silent purchase I found technically easy was the Voodoo2 SLI setup. OK it was a crazy expense of $500 back in the day but no fans and it just worked. The only hard part about it was crack...

You can fit a high-quality passive cooler to a good card later. Or you can live with the OEM passive cooler fitted to a sub-standard card. Your choice. I'd go with Sapphire, in fact I did. It's a better card. The way I see it I can fit some MASSIVE cooler array designed for a 58xx series card later,...

My review is the first one posted on NewEgg for the Vapor-X 5750. I like the card. If you read the existing thread comparing PowerColor to Sapphire, the concern I grasped for PowerColor is it's another slapped-together budget card. Sapphire is using better components. See here: http://www.silentpcre...

What's your fans configuration? I only have 2 fans. The Corsair PSU fan is fairly quiet. And the Antec Solo chassis fan which is pulling air over the Ninja on the CPU. Chassis fan is the one provided with the case and has that 3-position switch that dangles out of the rear of the case. Unless it's ...

Well I suppose one thing you could do to make use of existing Vapor-X heatsink is just take something like old Zalman FB123 and bend it. Have the large fan at low RPM blowing over the card and just disable the existing fan.

Ah I see.

I found Radeon Bios Editor (RBE) but it doesn't seem to support 5750 as yet.

I have noticed the Sapphire spinning the fan a bit faster and the noise ramping up after playing L4D2 at 1680x1050 with all settings maxed for a while. Tolerable but does need improvement IMO.

The best term is indeed QUIET in any system with fans. Then it's just a matter of whether this new component is at least as QUIET as the existing fans. Sapphire 5750 Vapor-X is quiet enough for me. Fan generally runs at 40% and is only a little louder than chassis fan. See thread here: http://www.si...

I played around with CCC fan-settings. If I set it to manual, and start cranking up the speeds the 100% is certainly quite loud! The default automatic settings seems to run it at 40% which is not loud, but is noticably louder to me than the Antec Solo chassis fan is on low setting. If I manually set...

Curiously the video connectors are unlabelled (no 1 or 2) ATI driver weirdness (9.11 CCC sometimes uses 50% CPU until I kill it?) I have a pretty quiet sy...

I ended up deciding on the Sapphire HD 5750 card from Newegg. I will run it with stock cooler at first. It looks to me like the SCS3 card is using the Arctic Cooling S1. Perhaps in a few weeks I will order that and equip with the "turbo cooling" fans.

In my case upgrading from a 7600GT with ZM80.

However I am leaning towards the Sapphire for quality reasons. I suppose some additional fan noise is a price I'll have to pay.....

Nvidia GT220

NVidia GT220 series looks decent & cheap. 40 nm GPU and Zotac will have a passive cooled variant.

Bit disappointing that it's DX10.1 not DX11.

Well it's interesting but .... no cards!

I checked NewEgg and no entry there to even indicate "autonotify when it's in stock". This guff about shortages of 40nm parts from the fabs, means it's likely to be a paper launch.

Pasive GT220 to replace 7600GT?

Nvidia GT220 with passive cooling:

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15941/65/

I have a 7600GT (256meg) that I refitted with ZM80 to make it passive. Works fine, but I'd like a bit of an upgrade and a speed bump without breaking the bank or requiring active cooling.
