Re: 92mm fans

I just put together a dual 1366 system last week and got the Noctua 4U heatsink fan combos. I am only using one 92mm fan per heatsink and I'm happy with how quiet they are even at full voltage. I've run the white bladed Nexus 92mm fans as case fans in the past and have been happy with those as well.

Something easy to try is new or different SATA cables. I have had SATA cables give me errors before, even ones that seemed to work fine in the past.

I use Lightroom 1.4 for processing my 5D files (12Mp), and have a Q6600 with 4GB of ram (32-bit windows though). LR uses all the cores very well, and I actually got rid of my overclock to 3.0 back to the stock 2.4 since I was always I/O limited, even with a raptor for O/S, velociraptor for LR cache ...

IF compressed air is enough to bend the shaft, then (all) fans are a total piece of junk. I didn't do anything other than compressed air. You may have blown dust/grit/junk under the hub of the fan, where it is now rubbing against the housing or perhaps even in the bearing races. I don't think compu...

I just put together a Q6600 build in an Antec solo and it is quieter than my last build, which was much quieter than a G4 mac mini that I borrowed for a few months. I don't know how the new mac minis compare to the old noise-wise, but if it is similar I wouldn't pick one on a noise basis alone over ...

I wanted an nForce professional 3400 or 3600 chipset board also, but after looking at nVidia's website and seeing only drivers for Windows 2003 server, I'm not so sure anymore. I used Windows 2000 for over 5 years and only switched to XP when I built a new PC earlier this month. I think of XP as little more than an overpriced Windows 2000 service pack. If Microsoft had continued their NT naming conventions and released 2K as NT 5, then XP should have been NT 5.1, rather t...

If you don't mind getting an Intel CPU instead, you might want to look into something with their new integrated graphics, like their P35 chipset, since the video driver is open source and reportedly pretty good. Both the ATI and nVidia drivers are only available as binary blobs.

One can also cut some heatshrink tubing over the coil and shrink it against the wires, which may or may not expose the actual coil to more heat if one is worried about that kind of thing. Also bonestonne, I wouldn't consider dual Pentum II Xeons anything close to "one of the first dual processor sys...

Well, I have started a for-profit website before. I don't know how much help I can be, but you need to buy a domain name. WD5000KS a POS?

Hi, I just recieved a WD5000KS based on the review here and it is having major problems: It keeps freezing my system up for ~5-10 minutes at a time, after which I'll have a few seconds of interactivity. Any news on the single platter WD740ADFD?

Hi, I remember reading that WD was going to make a single platter version of the 74 GB Raptor, I think suffixed with ADFD like the 150GB series.

Has anyone been able check one out? Can you buy them in the US yet?

Thanks

Agree about switches vs. hubs, and switches are now coming way down in price. Good reminder. Yep. I just picked up a passive 5 port D-link gigabit switch at Frys for $9.99 last week (after rebates). My current choice for a stable low-power consumption music server is a coppermine 600eb, run at 100 MHz FSB (instead of 133 MHz), which results in even cooler operation. The heatsink is a massive passive one. I can also then use my favorite chipset, the 440BX at a supported clock speed. I plan on on...
