Well, I screwed up. It wasn't the card after all. It was the CPU Heatsink Fan. I went into the BIOS of my Asus P5B-E and switched the CPU Fan to "Silent Mode." It worked like a charm. I've got egg on my face now! I have the EVGA 8800GTS 640MB and the fan is dead quiet. I can't even hear it i...

I would remove the upper hard drive chamber completely and add another 120MM fan at the front there for air intake. It netted me about a 3~5C drop in temps on both the GPU and motherboard. This will be at the cost of some extra noise however. I'm not currently using the fan there, because my system ...

First off, I don't appreciate your tone TomZ, as you obviously have NO idea who I am or what my experience is. Varying the speed of an AC motor is not normally done simply by changing the voltage with some sort of rheostat. The problem with using TRIACs, in my experience, is noise. Just as you will ...

OK People. First OFF, VOLTAGE has nothing to do with slowing down an AC fan. To control the speed of an AC fan you must vary the frequency of the AC down from 50/60Hz using a frequency driver. The varying of speed in ceiling fans is usually accomplished by using different taps in the motor windings....

I setup a Celeron D a couple months ago and it ran much cooler, but it was the 2.53GHz version, which is probably why. This seems to be common with all the new Intel processors. I setup a Pentium D820 system for a customer last week and saw 50~53C idle. Running Prime 95 brought the poor thing all th...

Buy yourself some extension cables... 20 Pin Extension Cable 4 Pin Extension Cable Just eliminate the fan in the bottom chamber with the PSU as it will not be necessary for your system unless you're running more than 1 or 2 hard drives down there. You can monitor your hard drive temps just to make s...

Re: Handy Info
EDIT :( Much reduced fan control options, CPU only = not good...... EDIT2 Only forum reported issue I could find with AN8-Ultra was CPU temp (high) mis-readings. Yeah, I downloaded that manual too and was quite unimpressed with the fan control options. Also, the temp reading problem with the AN8-Ul...

I'm very near replacing the stock fan on my VF700Cu with a Panasonic FBA08T12L. It's a 15mm thick 80mm fan that appears to be a good candidate for the swap. I'll post pics once it's installed! I would get a card without the Zalman cooler pre-intalled as the one on that card does not allow you to run it in "silent" mode. So basically, the fan is running on high speed all the time. I would get (or similar): eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card And then just...

Regarding cooling of motherboard components: Perhaps you should try measuring the temperature without a fan to see just how hot the components get. Bear in mind that many modern MOSFETs and other semiconductor devices can withstand maximum junction temperatures of 180 or even 200C - far higher than...

Yate Loons are in
Yate Loons have now replaced the much-maligned Vantec Stealths. The difference is quite striking. Thanks to jab-tech for taking my hard-earned dollars on these babies.

Re: Why is everyone bashing Zalman?
Well, you'll have to excuse us, most of us care more about acoustics than aesthetics. Heck, my computer is downright ugly. It's sitting on a shoe shelf in open air amidst a mess of cables going to and fro the router, the access point, the desk lamp, etc. How often do I look under the desk to watch ...

What software are you using to tell the fans to turn on when the temp hits 34? I'd be interested in doing something similar myself My ABIT AN8-Ultra motherboard has the Abit FanEQ built-in to the motherboard on the BIOS. I can configure it to run from 6V to 12V within a given range. Below the low t...

Re: Why is everyone bashing Zalman?
Why wouldn't you also have a case fan with a 7700? A ninja is actually the one of these two that can help get rid of a rear fan, by putting a fan on it and ducting it to the rear fan slot. An xp120 could also be used for replacing the rear fan with one burried deeper in the case, or for blowing dow...
