Re: Hitachi 5K3000 2TB experiences

Anyways, I got a chance to mount this Hitachi drive finally. It is infact as quiet as one of the best Best Samsung H204 2TB drive I have. No vibrations. But it seems little warmer than Samsung drives, almost by 3 degrees. Also seems power consumptions is little more than Samsung (Probably by 0.5 wat...

Thanks for very detailed analysis fumino! :) In addition to my current 5 x Samsung F4 2TB drives which are all over the map for vibrations, I bought Hitachi 5k3000 drive in NewEgg deal. I just got it yesterday, and I will hook it up and check to see how it sounds/vibrations. I will provide info abou...

Re: PSU options for NAS (8xHDD)

Howdy all, I'd like to get your opinion on my planned NAS and what power options I have. Here's my planned system (with power requirements): Gigabyte GA-D525TUD with Intel Atom D252 (<45W) Vantec 6 port SATA PCI card (<5W) 8 x Western Digital 2TB hard drives (8 x <8W = <64W) So my estimated total p...

Hopefully, this will be useful for someone else.

WOW, that's a really nice case. Did you experiment with different suspension length? For me, some crazy long suspensions did the best for drive silencing I ever experienced. Like 4 pieces of 50 cm rubber on each side. Yes distance between anchor points, tension in the cable does matter. I took midd...

Re: SpinPoint EcoGreen F4EG 2TB HD204UI/Z4

I am surprised that you people are complaining about vibrations. I think I read in this topic that it does not vibrate. So it seems that it depends what piece man gets but it should not be like that. If it is only 5400 rpm and three platters. It should not vibrate at all. When it vibrates I would s...

Re: SpinPoint EcoGreen F4EG 2TB HD204UI/Z4

I was more than surprised how much mine vibrates, it's comparable to 7200 rpm drives. I was running out of time, so returning and asking for a refund was not an option, but I was seriously considering it. It is cooler, quicker, (i believe) more reliable, and has better RAID support than any WD Gree...

Thanks for quick reply! Though off topic, I am looking for a heat sink like that with height less than 4" (ideal is 3"). I intended to use this with single case fan, so it needs to enough tall, but not obstruct my custom HDD cage. I am also looking at Alpine 11 Pro which seems little wider, but not ...

Re: Custom NAS Build EMI shielded wooden case - Quiet and co

Thanks for compliments. This is my first custom handmade case. I did minor customizations to commercial cases before, but never from ground up. There is just enough space to fit low-profile PCI/PCIe cards, but that will block the smooth airflow. As this is intended exclusively for NAS, it does not r...

Re: MSI 740GM-P25 Athlon X2 250 vs ASRock G43Twins Celeron E

Anyways finally got the build phase 1 done. With 6 drives (5 x 2TB drives and one 32GB flash boot drive), it is idling at 44 watts, and when data drives spin down, power drops to 28 watts ( still taking about close 1 watt when spin down). Overall this setup reached my original goals of system under ...

Re: Dell DA-2 To PicoPSU, Will this method work?

If you do not have DA-2 running, there would not be standby power to PICO PSU. WIthout Standby power, it woud not be able to send remote on-off signal. May be you can use a DPDT power button which will ground DA-2 power on PIN, and as usual button connection. Once power is on for a moment and PICO P...
