@Csoszi: That seems an interesting way of circumventing some problems... Do you know if the drives power-up again if needed (direct access from Explorer, or from the network)? If so, that could actually be a great idea to add to a WHS machine... Cheers. Miguel P.S.: Btw, if that utility does what i...

The solution to your problem is called Revosleep. Works like charm for me.

Try revoSleep. http://revosleep.realspooky.de/
After each power up you should run it to sleep the specified drive(s). However I don't know if the turned off drive will remain off after waking from hibernation.

Those of you with starting problems might try to hook up a small 5 Watt/12 Volt lightbulb to the PSU. I use a bulb connected to a 3-pin fan header on my motherboard (Asus M2A-VM HDMI). Got the female connector and the wires from and old fan, connected the bulb to the appropriate wires, than to the m...

With the Asus M2A-VM (HDMI) you can go down to 0.8 Volt.

Concerning dimensions: uATX 245x229 mm; a couple of mm-s bigger than what you have specified.
Has Gb Ethernet.
You can disable almost (?) everything (haven't tried the int. video, since I am using that!)

think the latest AMD/ATI integrated graphics chipsets were roughly comparable to a Radeon 9700 in performance, which is very useable in even modern games. Not sure about the Nvidia ones though I think they weren't far behind. I am afraid you have overestimated the 3D power of the latest IGP solutio...

Excuse me, off topic question!

Alfred! How does your HD401LJ compare to the WD3200KS, concerning resonance, idle and AAM enabled seek noise?

Just stick to the WD KS family. Older WD drives are not as quiet. I have a 3200JB (Caviar SE, ATA100); it's terrible when compared to a 3200KS.

And do NOT trust the dB values on the WD site: copy/paste numbers!

Don't worry; its not a bug, but a feature of all (?) WD drives. I have 3 3200KS, a 3200YS, and a 3200JB; all of them makes the same weird noise during shutdown.

You can suspend it in one of the upper 5.25 drive bays with sewing elastics, and suspend a 80-92 mm silent, undervolted fan right underneath the HDD. A modest airflow is more than enough (maybe in LA, too).
And go for WD Caviar SE16 drives!

Hello doctore! The KS is fine, I have 3 WD3200KS in my Antec P150, all of them have the same low noise level (although one of them is equipped with a different motor). One of them seems to vibrate slightly more, but its not a problem in a P150  Migrated to WDs from Samsung P80 and P120 drives ...

That's some funny pricing! Generally the YS costs a couple of bucks more than the KS of the same capacity. The YS belongs to the Raid Edition drive family with higher MTBF, NCQ, TLER, etc. useful for using it in a Raid array. See the Key Features and FAQ here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products...

whiic: I have two WD3200KS and a WD3200JB, but my JB (Mfg: May 2006) is not quiet at all, sounds like a vacuum cleaner when compared to the KS.

Although I dont't have any personal experience with the Maxtor and Seagate drives you mentioned, the WD3200KS is an excellent HDD, both cool and quiet. I have two of these drives and are very pleased with them.

Similar experience here. I bought a WD3200KS a couple of weeks ago, then sold the SP2504C/Nidec. The new Caviar SE16 line seems to be a solid performer.

I bought a Western Digital WD3200KS last week, and this device put all my Samsungs (SP2504C Nidec, SP2514N Nidec, SP1614C Nidec, SP1614N JVC) to shame in terms of idle noise: the WD is extremely quiet! When AAM is enabled, seek noise is comparable to or even lower than that of the P120 family. So I ...

Go for the WD2500KS. I bought a WD3200KS (320 GB) last week, and was surprised how quiet it was. Idle noise is significantly less than that of my Samsung SP2504C. If AAM is enabled and set to minimum (I used the Hitachi Feature Tool for setting), the seek noise is also very low. So I will say goodby...

Forget the TriCool!
I have one that came with my P150: first I used it at 12 Volt/Low. After a week it started to make an annoying clicking/ticking sound. Then I ran it at 5 Volt/High: same issue after 8-10 days of use. Have to dump it and get a Nexus.
