You could try installing the CoreAVC decoder. It's the most efficient HD decoder available for .mkv playback. The only drawback is that is doesn't support GPU acceleration. Programs like WinDVD and PowerDVD have decoding algorithms that use the GPU, and should greatly reduce CPU load. Watching an HD...

So has anyone tried a 3870 with a passive HR-03 yet? I'm about to purchase this card, but I'm afraid I won't have room for a fan on an HR-03 =/ I have a X-Fi + a tv tuner (more heat :() right underneath the 3870. Everything is in a P180 with 5v Yate-Loons, which along with the Antec Neo HE550 are t...

most newer cards out nowadays use a digital PWM for their power regulation... it comes with the territory to hear squeeling unfortunatly. It seems like every new card I've tried has done it. I thought custom designed power circuits would resolve this issue, but it didn't. It sucks, because the pric...

Add the Gigabyte GV-NX88T512HP to the list of whining VGA cards. At this point, I've given up on the possibility that there is a current generation card that doesn't whine. The "Ultra Durable" caps and chokes did nothing to reduce the electrical noise associated with running the card in 3D mode. The...

WD3200BEVT in SQD2.5-1000 = Silent Storage
I recently ordered a WD3200BEVT and a 2.5" Scythe Quiet Drive to achieve silent storage. It worked out perfectly. Even the seeks are inaudible at 4' away. The drive has pretty decent performance for a notebook drive as well. http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/6487/74158837ej8.png Just thought I'd sh...

I just pulled the trigger. Hopefully my theory proves to be correct.

I've had the same problem with my 8800GT(s), a 512MB and a 256MB version. I also had the ATI 3870 and 3850, and they both whined. The 8600GTS I have runs fine, no whine at all. I started up a thread to see if anyone isn't experiencing this whine. http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=...

It's not the video cards by themselves, but rather the arcane mixture of the card, motherboard and PSU. This is true, but I'd still like to know if anyone else is having this experience, or is it only me. I also thought about one of these: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=3&id=2435...

VGAs that don't have electrical buzzing, whining, squealing.
With all of the new graphics cards to come into the market lately, it's definitely time for an upgrade from my 8600GTS. The 8600GTS was devoid of any annoying electrical noise. The problem is, I have tried the cards below, and each one has had electrical noise: 1. An OEM (Nvidia) 8800GT 512MB 2. Sap...

In my experience, which isn't extensive in any way, every OEM Seasonic PSU I have made contact with has whined/chirped. This only refers to an Antec SU-380 in an NSK 2400 (bought from Microcenter in Atlanta, GA), an SU-380 in an NSK 4400 (bought from www.directron.com), and a VX450 (bought at www.ne...

I just bought a VX450 and it has a buzz/chirping sound to it. Sounds like a cricket chirping at night. I mainly hear it when the HDD seeks or if I run a game. It makes this noise constantly while running HL2 EP2. I was going to get a Seasonic Energy+ 550. Underneath, it looks close to the HX-520, wh...

I finally got all my up/downgrades completed. I took some performance hits in raw CPU and GPU power, but my system now reflects my everyday usage. I'm also back to 2 fan operation (one chassis, one psu). Heres what's different: 1. Q6600 replaced by E6750 2. Gigabyte 7900GS replaced by XFX 8600GT 3. ...
