Re: Bay-trail motherboards

I have bought 1T SSD's and also 1T SATA drives but each one gives me a head ache, even when accessed from the next room! So maybe a smaller size as you suggest for the SSD might work if it is low powered. To give you an example, 16G USB sticks from Kingston are OK with me. 32 USB sticks I start to ...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

Gigabyte's highest spec Gemini Lake board is this: https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/J4105N-H-rev-10#kf The CPU is almost as good as the J5005, just slower GPU peak clock and fewer execution units. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=128984,128989 I can't find ...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

I haven't used an IDE drive in more than 10 years, i wouldn't recommend it, specially the storage you will have available will be extremely small, if you want low power grab a small ssd, it will not only be more efficient but the pc will be much more responsive and silent, there are very cheap sata...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

Failing that, could you recommend any newer CPU's/MB's that have the same or lower power requirements that the Z3740/D has? Something like ASRock J4105B-ITX Gemini Lake , maybe it can fulfill you low power fanless desire. Thanks Abula. Do you know if it's possible to use IDE (ATA) drives with this ...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

Hi folks, It's been quite a few years since I visited here. I've been working with completely silent systems for years now. My main desktop is rather antiquated now. A Pentium-M based MB still on WinXP. A small fan in the MB but inaudible since the CPU case is in an adjoining room. I also use two id...

Actually the tablet can be used with an external monitor Are you talking about that ? Re: Alive and well?

Set aside I don't think you can use an external monitor with it, but that tablet is, ahem, a tablet. So, from a desktop perspective, it's low on RAM, it's low on storage, and it's not expandable (not to mention it's low on performance). Does it actually fit your needs? I can't help about that. Actu...

Re: Alive and well?

What's the closest I can come to the Atom Z3740D? AFAIK no one. With reference to power draw maybe a quad core with 2Mb cache and 7.5W TDP, (N29X0/N35X0) but they have several different technical features. With reference to technical features, perhaps the J1900/J2900: to be fair, those latter just ...

Re: Alive and well?

We are now at a stage where you can build a truly silent PC (not just pretend it's silent). :) I built my first truly silent PC in 2008. It was silent enough for a buddy of mine to sit two feet next to it while it was placed on the desk and with the side panel off (had been tinkering) without notic...

Re: Alive and well?

I recently bought a Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet with a Intel Atom Z3740D CPU. This has inspired me to look for motherboards with this CPU and possibly build a home system with it. That CPU (actually a BayTrail-T) is specifically meant for hybrid/mobile environment: but you can look for some different o...

If you want a Windows based tablet, you may want to wait until later this year when Win 8 is available. Try google for an advance peek. Thanks! I agree that Atom is amazing in laptops. Under $400, over 5 hours of battery life at around 3 lbs.! HFat and I were helping someone consider their desktop computer options. Atom on the desktop is of limited appeal, IMHO. OK, so the Atom is not an option for a silent desktop system. Which low-powere...

@NoiseFreeGuy: I would read up on shielding and grounding for electro-smog. There's no question EMFs affect many people, experts say its far higher than 1%. ... I head you mention having wifi in your house... that is your number 1 problem! I have a bunch of solderless batteries that I'd like to put together to make a battery pack (4).
Unfortunately the store didn't have batteries with tabs when I bought them.

Would anyone here know of an easy way to connect these to get my battery pack working?

Why get a smartphone? I would think the main reason for a smartphone is if one wants to have it on and be using it a lot. Good question. A couple of incentives.
