Re: New build advice

Yeah, I understand the situation with the Intel graphics, but having those ports there when I can't use them as I don't have a core i5 661 or similar seems a little pointless! The reason I didn't look at the i3? Probably marketing. I've no idea, I've just re-read anandtech's article (http://www.anan...

New build advice

Dear lord, I haven't made a post here in a while but... Here goes. I'm looking for a HTPC that will double up as a gaming rig. My current system seems to have motherboard issues and is getting old now (4 years old). It's perfectly good at maybe being a server but when taxed, bluescreens galore and i...

Of course if you still need the floppy dive from time to time, you can always use an USB drive like this one here We use them all the time at work on our Dells and they work a treat most of the time. Older BIOSES from 8-10 years ago sometimes have trouble looking at the usb drive. This of course the...

Looks like you've thought this through pretty well... The only thing I'll add is the NTFS driver, it's a little funny. It works well by all accounts but you need to use some extra commands to mount it then fix something is breaks and unmount it. It's not too much effort if you really need that data,...

It's feasible, but I don't think I'm BOfH enough to do it: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/grub_intro?page=0%2C0 It's worth the $20 extra for sanity's sake. This, like all other things, may only be proven by rolling up sleeves and digging in. true, just as long as you don't get so angr...

I was planning on the exact same setup a few weeks ago, so I know how much of a headache this is. my plan was going to me a plain simple, let the BIOS handle it. install linux on it's own disk when no other disks are there and do the same with the other two OSs. However I gave up on that when Vista ...

However I'm very likely to want to play with it loads before settling down with it downloading in the background. I don't think a box like that can be kept s...

If you look at the Western Digital website they do have tools "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic" tools, which can test your drive. I would advise you to give it a go. Besides that sometimes it helps to connect the drive to another port, other jumper settings if it is P-ATA, (there is a difference between ...

HDD problems :(

I'm wondering whether anyone can help me with this. I recently bought a WD5000AAKS and I can't seem to reliably get it working with my system (see my sig for details). I ended up sending the first drive back, which was found faulty, and got a replacement. I'm really hoping the replacement isn't also...

how many hard drives have you got? If it's onlty the one then maybe the SOLO is the way to go.
Because I think you'll only have the same mounting problems with your motherboard in a P182.

It's like it doesn't enjoy being used vertically. You mean horizontally? Then yes, some sleeve bearing fans do not like being mounted horizontally, particularly in high heat environments. Even if they do last, some produce more noise (humming) when mounted this way. Well the fan casing is Horizonal...

How do you have the fan mounted? Could it be vibration from hard mounting? Or is it fan buzz/growl? If it's from the fan itself, not much to be done there except RMA. Low Humming on Scyche D-Flex

Does anyone else get a really anoying hum on their scythe d-flex (or which ever flex that comes with the ninja)?

The hum seesm to be a lot more apparent at 6v (or whatever my fan controller recudes the voltage to), however I think the noise of the fan at higher speed hides it.

The 12 V reading is 7.75% high, while the ATX limit is 5%. So that could be a bit of a cause for concern, I'd physically check it with a multimeter before starting worrying though. The 12 volt rail hasn't been used by motherboards for a long time, so don't worry about it. It's just some dummy readi...

Is the -12v the root of my problem? Or...

Re: 240MM fan search (in the UK)

Does anyone know where you can get a 240mm fan that might mount on the standard fittings of 4 x 120 mm fans? Say you need 4X CFM for your case cooling. You can get X from each of 4 fans, or 2X from each of 2 fans. That means you need twice the RPM from the 2 fans as from the 4 - a difference of 18d...

if it's running properly, it should use all the "spare" CPU cycles and therefore your CPU will run hotter, much like if you were in game. Folding@Home will do the exact same thing as BOINC. As far as regards the "thermal specification" 60 sounds a little on the cool side for a processor, but then ag...
